Here we have listed the top 20 safest cars tested by Bharat NCAP so far in India as Mahindra XEV 9e leads the way with highest score

The safety ecosystem in India has improved big time over the last two to three years and the arrival of Bharat NCAP assessments could not have come at a better time bringing unprecedented clarity to crash performance. What used to be a secondary consideration has now become a key buying parameter as more cars are now scoring above 30 out of 32 in adult occupant protection – a level that was once rare in the Indian market.

Right at the top sat the Mahindra XEV 9e and Tata Harrier EV – both achieving a perfect 32.00 out of 32 in AOP along with top-tier child safety scores effectively setting the benchmark in the domestic market. The Mahindra BE 6 posted 31.97 – missing perfection by a fraction but still placing itself among the safest cars tested yet.

Among traditional models, the Kia Seltos delivers a standout 31.70 AOP and 45 out of 49 in child protection – making it the highest scoring IC-engined SUV. It is followed by the Maruti Victoris at 31.66 and the Maruti e Vitara around the 31.5 mark – both showcasing how much the largest car producer in the country evolved significantly by improving structural safety.

The next set of models continues this high scoring pattern. The recently launched Tata Punch EV recorded about 31.46 while the Hyundai Venue followed with 31.15 AOP and over 44 in COP. The Tata Sierra also sat in the 31 plus bracket while the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Skoda Kylaq hover just above the 30 points score.

Moving further down, models like the Hyundai Tucson, Tata Curvv EV, Tata Punch and Toyota Innova Hycross continue to hold impressive scores in the 29 to 31 range. MPVs such as the Maruti Suzuki Invicto and EVs like the Mahindra XUV 400 further show that safety performance is no longer limited to a specific segment or body style.

Tata Motors’ established range comprising the Harrier, Safari, Nexon EV and Altroz stays put with scores in the high 20s to low 30s range. Meanwhile, the Syros adds to Kia’s growing presence with competitive scores close to the 30 mark. A major talking point this year is the resurgence of Korean brands. The new-gen Hyundai Venue and Kia Seltos have posted appreciable AOP and COP figures – imposing an apparent comeback.

Their improved crash structures and standard safety tech have significantly closed the gap with Indian manufacturers. The progress has also intensified competition in many ways. Hyundai and Kia’s improved safety scores are putting real pressure on Tata and Mahindra who have dominated this space in recent times. With the under 20 lakh SUV segment becoming extremely competitive, the push for better crash performance, new platforms and higher safety scores is only expected to accelerate in the coming years.
