Tata Safari EV Road-Testing Begins Ahead Of Launch This Year

Safari.ev to be Tata Motors’ first three-row electric model and will likely be offered in six- and seven-seat versions

Tata Motors has been on an aggressive electrification spree in recent years, rolling out electric variants of nearly every car in its line-up. The Altroz, Sierra, and Safari are the last remaining models, and the company is already working on pure electric variants of the SUVs.

The Tata Sierra.ev is expected to be introduced in the early part of the third quarter, and it should be followed by the Tata Safari.ev in the early part of the fourth quarter, just in time for the festive season. The latter will be the company’s new flagship EV, positioned above the Tata Harrier.ev launched last year.

Spy shots suggest that the Tata Safari.ev will look quite close to its ICE donor. Like on the Tata Harrier.ev, key exterior changes should be an enclosed upper grille, distinctive 19-inch alloy wheels in a more aerodynamic design, and a “.ev” badge on the front doors. Unlike the ICE Safari, the Safari.ev has been seen featuring side steps as well, which should aid ingress and egress.

Another visual difference will be evident from the rear – a multi-link rear suspension with frequency-dependent damping shock absorbers. This setup should provide better handling and ride comfort. The interior of the Safari.ev will likely look mostly the same as the ICE Safari. The cockpit displays should feature a few EV-specific functions.

Tata Motors will likely launch the Safari.ev in standard-range RWD, extended-range RWD, and extended-range AWD variants. The standard-range RWD and extended-range RWD variants should feature a single motor producing 175 kW (235 hp) and 315 Nm of torque, along with a 65 kWh LFP battery pack and a 75 kWh LFP battery pack, respectively.

The extended-range AWD variant should add a front motor with 116 kW (156 hp) and 164 Nm of torque. In total, there would be 291 kW (390 hp) of power and up to 504 Nm of torque. The peak torque will likely be available with an additional ‘Boost’ drive mode. The extended-range AWD variant should also come with additional terrain modes, including Snow/Grass, Mud-Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. It will likely use the 75 kWh LFP battery pack as standard.

The Safari.ev will likely be capable of travelling around 500 kilometres on a single charge in the standard-range RWD variant and around 600 kilometres in the extended-range RWD and extended-range AWD variants. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) bi-directional charging capability should be standard, allowing customers to power external devices using energy stored in the battery pack.
