VinFast’s plant in Tamil Nadu currently has an annual production capacity of 50,000 units which can be expanded to 1.5 lakh units
Less than a year after commencing operations at its Tamil Nadu facility, VinFast has crossed an important manufacturing milestone in India. The Vietnamese electric vehicle maker has announced production of its 10,000th vehicle at its Thoothukudi plant affirming the pace at which the company is scaling local operations in one of the world’s fastest growing EV markets.
The local base is the company’s first manufacturing unit outside Vietnam. Spread across 400 acres within the SIPCOT Industrial Park at Thoothukudi, the facility houses body shop, paint shop, assembly operations, quality control infrastructure and logistics functions. The plant currently has an annual production capacity of 50,000 units.
It can be expanded to 1.5 lakh units depending on future demand. VinFast remains a relatively new name for Indian consumers and does not have the decades of market familiarity enjoyed by established manufacturers. Local production therefore becomes as much about building confidence as it is about reducing costs and improving operational efficiency.

The company’s initial India lineup consists of the VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs – both assembled at the Tamil Nadu facility. The VF 6 is positioned in the midsize electric SUV segment while the larger VF 7 sits in a slightly more premium manner. Prices currently start from Rs. 16.49 lakh for the VF 6 and Rs. 20.89 lakh for the VF 7 (both, ex-showroom).
The recently launched VinFast VF MPV 7 is built around a 60.13 kWh battery pack working alongside a front-mounted electric motor producing 201 hp and 280 Nm of torque. Power is sent through a single-speed automatic transmission and the MPV delivers a claimed driving range of 517 km on the Indian test cycle. VinFast claims the battery can be charged from 10 to 70 per cent in around 30 minutes using a DC fast charger.

It is configured as a seven-seater and rides on 19-inch wheels. The e-MPV comes equipped with a large touchscreen infotainment system, connected car technology and multiple comfort features. In India, the VF MPV 7 is priced from Rs. 24.49 lakh (ex-showroom) – placing it against rivals such as the BYD eMax 7 and Kia Carens Clavis EV.
VinFast has already outlined a second phase of investment at the Thoothukudi facility committing an additional USD 500 million towards manufacturing electric buses and electric two-wheelers. The move is part of a larger USD 2 billion investment roadmap for India.
