Toyota Innova HyCross recently crossed 2 lakh cumulative units on its own while the Hyryder has built an impressive fanbase in the midsize SUV segment
Three lakh hybrid vehicles have been sold in India as Toyota Kirloskar Motor has reached this milestone in a short span of time by being the best-selling hybrid carmaker in the country. It covers cumulative sales across the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova HyCross, Camry Hybrid and Vellfire models carrying Toyota self charging hybrid electric technology that requires no external charging infrastructure.
The electric vehicle charging network is still developing and range anxiety remains a real concern for a large section of consumers. Toyota’s self charging hybrid addresses both – the battery replenishes through regenerative braking and engine power keeping the system topped up without any intervention from the driver. An 8 year hybrid battery warranty backs ownership confidence further.
The Hyryder and Innova HyCross have been the primary volume drivers behind this milestone. The Innova HyCross recently crossed 2 lakh cumulative units on its own while the Hyryder has built an impressive fanbase in the midsize SUV segment since launch. Both models compete in categories where demand is high and customer profiles skew toward families and frequent long distance travellers.

Globally, Toyota has sold over 38 million electrified vehicles with cumulative CO2 savings attributed to that fleet crossing 197 million tonnes. India is a relatively small portion of that total but has grown faster than most markets over the past two years. The 3 lakh figure was not inevitable as it required the right products at the right price points and the Hyryder in particular, offered at a more accessible price than the Innova HyCross, played a large part.
Toyota’s position in India is built around what the company calls a multi pathway approach – rather than committing exclusively to battery electric vehicles, the strategy covers hybrid, plug in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell technology alongside alternative fuels including flex fuel. In a market as varied as India, where infrastructure, income levels and usage patterns differ dramatically across geographies, this approach has worked so far.

No other manufacturer in India comes close to the three-lakh sales number in the hybrid segment. Hyundai, Kia and Maruti Suzuki are all developing hybrid SUVs for the coming years but Toyota starts from a position of deep technology maturity and an established consumer base that trusts the powertrain.
