Hero MotoCorp plans to introduce a sub-Rs 1 lakh Vida scooter in India around August 2026 with Rs 1,500 crore Investment for FY27

A fixed-battery electric scooter priced under Rs 1 lakh is coming from Hero MotoCorp in August 2026 and it could be the most consequential launch in Vida’s short history. Built around a 3.8 kWh pack, it takes direct aim at the mass commuter segment that has largely stayed with petrol two-wheelers due to the price barrier. Hero appears to be betting that this is where the next array of electric adoption will come from.

The timing of this launch sits within a much larger investment cycle. Hero MotoCorp has committed over Rs 1,500 crore in capital expenditure for FY27 – spread across EV capacity expansion, ICE scooter production, new product development, brand building, connected vehicle platforms, GenAI-driven customer interfaces and low-emission powertrain options including flex-fuel.

A separate Rs 700 crore outlay is earmarked for a second global PATH centre in southern India to consolidate its aftermarket and accessories business. In addition, monthly EV manufacturing capacity has already moved from 15,000 to 25,000 units and a further 50 per cent increase over last quarter’s output is expected within weeks.

At the Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh, the target is to build 2.8 lakh electric two-wheelers through FY27 as against 1.48 lakh units produced in the last fiscal. The annual production capacity for Vida is being built toward 6.6 lakh units – a scale that would make it one of the largest dedicated EV production bases among Indian two-wheeler manufacturers.

The Vida brand’s performance in FY2026 gives context to why Hero is pushing this hard. Registrations came in at around 1.44 lakh units pushing market share to 10.3 per cent. In April 2026 alone, Vida dispatches grew 129 per cent year-on-year – the fastest growth rate among the top five electric two-wheeler brands for the month.

Besides the affordable mass market e-scooter, two electric motorcycles – the Lynx designed for off-road use and the Ubex – are both scheduled for 2027. On the ICE side, Hero is not easing up either. The Destiny scooter’s production capacity has been raised by 50 per cent and the Zoom’s capacity is being doubled. Hero closed FY2026 with 6.07 million total units against Honda’s 5.75 million with a gap of over 3.1 lakh units after the two brands had come unusually close in FY2025.
