From the sales data available, Maruti Suzuki continued its lead at the top ahead of a close tussle between Tata and Mahindra in May 2026
The passenger vehicle space continued its good run in May 2026 with most major manufacturers reporting healthy year-on-year growth. While Maruti Suzuki comfortably retained the top position, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Kia and Honda all posted notable gains ensuring consistent demand across compact and midsize segments.
Maruti Suzuki finished as the country’s largest carmaker again with domestic sales of 1,90,337 units in May 2026. The company recorded a 40 per cent increase over the 1,35,962 units sold in May last year while also improving 1.4 per cent compared to April 2026. The performance helped Maruti maintain a sizeable lead over its rivals despite intensifying competition across SUV categories.
Tata Motors held on to second position with 59,090 units – edging past Mahindra by just 1,069 units. The homegrown brand’s sales were virtually flat compared to April but surged 42.2 per cent year-on-year – making it one of the impressive performers among the major manufacturers. Mahindra & Mahindra followed closely with 58,021 units and posted a healthy 10.7 per cent annual increase while also improving 3 per cent month-on-month.

The fourth place stayed put with Hyundai. The Korean manufacturer sold 47,837 units in May – up 9.1 per cent over the same month last year. However, it was one of the few brands to register a monthly decline as volumes fell 7.8 per cent compared to April. Toyota continued its growth trajectory with 30,574 units – posting gains of 1.4 per cent month-on-month and 4.4 per cent year-on-year.
Kia registered another telling month with 27,586 units and a 23.6 per cent annual increase due to encouraging response to latest products including Carens Clavis. MG, on the other hand, reported 6,048 units and its figures continued largely stable month-on-month but saw a slight 4.1 per cent decline compared to May 2025.

Further down the order, Honda emerged as one of the biggest gainers. Sales jumped 25.6 per cent over April and 29.4 per cent over May last year to reach 5,111 units. Nissan recorded the highest year-on-year growth among all manufacturers listed, more than doubling volumes to 2,948 units with a 117.7 per cent increase over May 2025. Renault recorded its ninth consecutive month of wholesale growth in May 2026 but the exact numbers are not out yet.
