The flagship manufacturing plant of Mahindra in Chakan has reached the 30 lakh production milestone; last 10 lakh vehicles in just 27 months

Mahindra & Mahindra has achieved another significant manufacturing milestone as its Chakan production facility rolled out its 30 lakhth vehicle since commencing operations in December 2009. The landmark vehicle was the Mahindra BE 6 which shows the growing importance of the company’s born-electric portfolio alongside its expanding range of internal combustion SUVs.

The achievement also indicates the rapid increase in production volumes as the latest one million vehicles were manufactured in only 27 months compared to 107 months required for the first million. Located near Pune, the Chakan facility spread across 657 acres has grown into Mahindra’s primary manufacturing hub for passenger vehicles, electric vehicles and commercial vehicles.

The plant currently manufactures 19 models spread across more than 450 variants enabling Mahindra to respond quickly to changing customer requirements while supporting multiple powertrain technologies from a single location. The pace of production has accelerated considerably over the last few years – coinciding with the success of products such as the Scorpio N, Thar, XUV 3XO, XUV700, BE 6, XEV 9e and other SUVs.

The shorter time required to reach the latest production milestone also points the finger at the increasing utilisation of Mahindra’s manufacturing capacity as its SUV portfolio continues expanding across domestic and export markets. The Chakan facility has also undergone substantial technological upgrades. Manufacturing operations now incorporate Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, 5G connectivity and digital traceability across the production process.

Around 1,500 robots operate within the facility while the body shop has achieved automation levels exceeding 98 per cent. Robotic painting, automated sealant application, real-time weld monitoring, 3D component scanning and “No Fault Forward” quality checkpoints have also been integrated into the production system.

Production flexibility remains another major strength of the facility. Mahindra currently operates seven multi-model assembly lines allowing different vehicle platforms and powertrains to be assembled simultaneously. Autonomous mobile robots are deployed for material movement while artificial intelligence also supports shop-floor safety through continuous monitoring of personal protective equipment compliance.

More than 50 per cent of the facility’s total energy requirement is met through renewable sources while the electric vehicle manufacturing operations function entirely on 100 per cent renewable energy. The plant has also achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification and remains water positive by returning around 131 per cent of the water it consumes back to nature. Annual rainwater recharge at the facility stands at around 9.91 lakh kilo litres.

The Chakan plant has become an important production base for Mahindra’s international business as well. Vehicles manufactured here are exported to markets including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. It is expected to remain at the centre of Mahindra’s future product and export strategy in the coming years too.
