From Renault to Kia and Hyundai, three automakers to bring hybrid technology to their most popular nameplates in India by 2027

Hybrid technology has been available in India for nearly two decades now, but mass adoption has picked up only in recent years following heavy localisation by Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM). With demand rising, more carmakers are preparing to introduce hybrid powertrains in their cars now. By next year, three popular SUVs will receive a hybrid powertrain in India.

1. Renault Duster

The third-generation Renault Duster, launched last month, has been confirmed to get a hybrid system this year, and that will most likely be in the fourth quarter. This powertrain will likely combine an 80 kW (107 hp) 1.8-litre direct injection petrol engine with a 36 kW (48 hp) electric motor, both powering the front wheels. The latter will rely on energy stored in a 1.4 kWh battery pack.

The Duster Hybrid is likely to have 116 kW (156 hp) of total power and 172 Nm of total torque from the above setup. In the city, Renault claims that it will be drivable 80% of the time in EV mode, offering up to 40% reduction in fuel consumption. With the tank full, customers will be able to travel up to 1,000 kilometres without a refuelling stop.

2. Kia Seltos

At its 2026 CEO Investor Day on 9 April, Kia confirmed it will introduce a hybrid powertrain option in three models between 2027 and 2029: Seltos, Carens, and Sonet. Earlier media reports suggest that the Seltos Hybrid will be the first to arrive on the market, as early as the beginning of 2027.

In India, Kia will likely only offer a FWD variant with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, both said to be manufactured locally.
