Five new plug-in hybrid and pure electric SUVs priced as low as around Rs. 15 lakh (ex-showroom) are coming to India later this year
With charging infrastructure expanding and improving, electrified vehicles with plug-in capability are finally seeing strong traction in India. While the high demand is largely centred on EVs, some companies are also evaluating the potential of PHEVs. Here are five new plug-in hybrid and electric SUVs that will be launched in India in the coming months:
1. Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella – May 2026 (expected)

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella, a new mid-size SUV, is the Japanese automaker’s first electric model in India. It is based on the same platform as the Maruti e Vitara and will be available with the same batteries, motors, and features, with the main difference being a relatively sleeker and more elegant design for the front-end. It will be offered in two single-motor FWD variants, one with a range of 440 kilometres and one with a range of 543 kilometres.
2. Tata Sierra.ev – June 2026 (expected)

The Tata Sierra.ev will be the pure electric variant of the all-new Tata Sierra launched in November 2025. Save for a cleaner design at the front, it should look nearly identical to the ICE donor. Tata Motors is likely to offer the Sierra.ev in single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD drivetrain layouts, with a range of up to approximately 600 kilometres. The company should equip it with several additional features over the all-new Sierra, including vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) bi-directional charging functions. Unlike the regular Sierra, the Sierra.ev would have an independent rear suspension.
3. JSW SUV – September 2026 (expected)

JSW Motors’ first product will be a model derived from Chinese automaker Chery’s Jetour Traveller C-DM. Earlier known as the Jetour T2, and still widely referred to by the older name in Indian media, the Chinese model is a D-segment plug-in hybrid SUV measuring 4,785 mm in length, 2,006 mm in width, and 1,875 mm in height, along with a 2,800 mm wheelbase. The original version is offered in three configurations, each with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and two or three electric motors. It delivers a pure electric range of up to 162 kilometres, as per WLTC.
4. Tata Safari.ev – September 2026 (expected)

The Tata Safari is also getting a pure electric variant, expected to be called ‘Safari.ev’. Like the Tata Harrier.ev, it should be offered in single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD variants, and it may have a range of up to around 600 kilometres. Tata Motors will likely launch it in 6- and 7-seat versions. In terms of features, vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) bi-directional charging functions, a multi-link rear suspension with Frequency Dependent Dampers (FDD), a Summon Mode, and Auto-Park Assist will likely be among the main upgrades over the ICE Safari.
5. MG Starlight 560 – October 2026 (expected)

The MG Starlight 560 will be a rebadged version of the Wuling Starlight 560 sold in China. JSW MG Motor plans to launch it in plug-in hybrid and pure electric variants in India. In China, the plug-in hybrid variant offers a pure electric range of 125 kilometres and the pure electric variant can travel up to 500 kilometres on a single charge, both as per CLTC. While internationally, the Starlight 560 is offered in 5- and 7-seat versions, India may only get the latter. It will compete with Mahindra’s XUV 7XO and XEV 9S and Tata Motors’ Safari and upcoming Safari.ev.
