EV car retail sales in May 2026 saw Tata Motors dominating the table ahead of Mahindra, JSW MG Motor, Maruti Suzuki and VinFast in India
The electric PV market continued its growth trajectory in May 2026 as retail registrations surged to 26,682 units. According to FADA retail data, EV car sales rose by an impressive 81.2 per cent compared to 14,725 units recorded during the same month last year. Demand also improved by 2 per cent over the previous month of April.
Tata Motors maintained its dominance in the segment and remained the country’s largest electric car retailer. The company registered 10,340 units in May 2026 compared to 5,083 units a year earlier resulting in a massive 103.4 per cent year-on-year increase. Enduring popularity for the Tiago EV, Punch EV and Nexon EV has helped Tata retain its leadership position.
The brand accounted for nearly 39 per cent of all electric passenger vehicle retail registrations during the month. Mahindra secured second position with 6,210 retail registrations and recorded an appreciable performance among major manufacturers. Sales more than doubled from 2,891 units recorded in May 2025 with a growth of 114.8 per cent.

Continued sales volumes for the XEV 9e, BE 6 and the new three-row XEV 9S has significantly consolidated Mahindra’s presence in the space over the past year. JSW MG Motor India completed the top three with 4,984 retail registrations courtesy of the Windsor EV. While volumes declined by 8 per cent compared to April 2026, the company still posted a healthy 8.4 per cent year-on-year improvement.
Maruti Suzuki occupied fourth position with 1,591 units. The company’s electric sales were supported by the recently introduced e Vitara which has rapidly emerged as a volume contributor. VinFast followed behind in the fifth position with 1,238 units as the Vietnamese manufacturer continued expanding its footprint in the domestic market through the VF series of electric SUVs.

Among premium and niche manufacturers, BYD recorded 686 units and posted 10.5 per cent growth over May 2025. BMW registered 352 units – rising 75.1 per cent year-on-year – while Mercedes-Benz reported 208 units after recording a 76.3 per cent month-on-month increase. Meanwhile, Hyundai and Kia witnessed lower volumes at 460 units and 349 units respectively.
Tesla registered 35 units during the month as the company gradually expands its presence following its market entry. Volvo recorded 29 units while Stellantis ended the month with 22 retail registrations.
