Yamaha is expected to introduce an all-new fully faired motorcycle, the YZF-R2, between the R15 and R3, opening up a new space in its performance lineup
Yamaha’s sportbike range in India could soon gain an entirely new member as the YZF-R2 is expected to debut on August 27. The motorcycle has been under media discussion for several months following trademark filings. Once introduced, the R2 will occupy the sizeable gap between the R15 and the larger R3, and it could sit in the volume spectrum.
The brand is believed to have developed the R2 around a new platform specifically for emerging markets. Reports indicate the motorcycle will be manufactured at the company’s Chennai facility before being supplied to export markets as well. Local manufacturing could also allow the company to keep pricing competitive in an increasingly crowded space.
Power is expected to come from a newly developed single-cylinder engine displacing around 200 cc. The motor is widely expected to feature liquid cooling, fuel injection and VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) tech. Output could be in the vicinity of 24-25 hp and around 19 Nm – channelled through a six-speed gearbox equipped with an assist and slipper clutch.

The larger displacement should deliver good acceleration and better highway cruising ability than the R15 while preserving Yamaha’s trademark high-revving character and frugality. A Deltabox frame, upside-down front forks, rear monoshock and disc brakes at both ends with dual-channel ABS are likely to be the key part of the package.
Yamaha is expected to tune the motorcycle for sharper handling too. The design is expected to draw heavily from Yamaha’s latest global R-series motorcycles. A larger fairing, sculpted fuel tank, split-seat arrangement, aerodynamic body panels, LED lighting, sleeker body panels and clip-on handlebars are all expected to feature.

The proportions should be noticeably bigger than the R15. The motorcycle may receive a TFT instrument display with Bluetooth connectivity, Yamaha Y-Connect integration, navigation support and a bi-directional quickshifter. Cruise control and selectable riding modes will also be made available. The expected asking price of Rs. 2.10 lakh to Rs. 2.30 lakh will place the YZF-R2 directly against the KTM RC 200, Hero Karizma XMR 210 and Suzuki Gixxer SF 250.
