Sedans Continue Leading Select Segments Despite SUV Surge In FY26

Despite their overall low demand in the Indian car market, sedans are still relevant and a strong pillar of growth for certain brands

The rising popularity of SUVs for aesthetic and practical reasons has eroded demand for sedans in recent years. However, sedans continue to dominate and grow in select segments.

In FY2026, the Maruti Dzire was India’s best-selling car across segments, which proves the India-specific sub-4 metre formula continues to have a strong appeal in the market. Data released by JATO Dynamics has revealed that Maruti Suzuki sold 2,28,682 units of the small sedan, now in its fourth generation. This figure marked a 38.6 year-on-year growth, which was equally impressive.

Beyond individual sales, the Maruti Dzire has a strong foothold in the fleet sector, in which the adapted commercial version called the ‘Maruti Tour S’ is performing very well. In FY2024, for instance, the Tour S contributed nearly 40% to Dzire sales. That was back when the Tour S was based on the third-gen Dzire. In March 2025, Maruti Suzuki launched a new version derived from the fourth-gen Dzire, and industry estimates indicate that the share has since grown close to 50%.

Prices of the Maruti Dzire range from Rs. 6,25,600 (ex-showroom) to Rs. 9,31,300 (ex-showroom). The Maruti Tour S is available in two configurations, with the base one costing Rs. 6,23,800 (ex-showroom) and the top one costing Rs. 7,09,800 (ex-showroom).

The Maruti Dzire contributed roughly 12.5% to Maruti Suzuki’s total sales in FY2026. None of its rivals, which include the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, and Tata Tigor, or sedans from any other segment, were among the top 5 models on the FY2026 sales chart. The Tata Nexon and Hyundai Creta were in the second and third spots, while the remaining two positions were held by the Maruti Ertiga and Maruti Swift.

In the luxury category, the Mercedes E-Class is giving a strong fight to the SUV trend. The global E-segment sedan has been a strong seller for decades, but its popularity has surged since Mercedes-Benz switched to the long-wheelbase version in the previous generation in 2017. The long-wheelbase version has made the E-Class the go-to choice for a chauffeur-driven luxury car.

With 4,350 units sold, the Mercedes E-Class was the best-selling luxury car in India in FY2026. Compared to FY2025, sales of the BMW 5 Series rival were up 22.3%. This model accounted for nearly 22% of Mercedes-Benz’s total sales in FY2026. Ex-showroom prices of the E-Class start at Rs. 80 lakh and go up to Rs. 93.50 lakh.
