The latest Kia test mule points the finger at a possible SUV that could sit between the Sonet and Seltos in the brand’s domestic lineup
Kia looks to be working on an all-new SUV for the domestic market as spy images have surfaced from high altitude test routes. The heavily camouflaged prototype is rather intriguing in many sense and its proportions suggest something larger than the Sonet yet smaller than the Seltos. While an official confirmation is still some distance away, the test mule has sparked speculation about a new product.
Despite the extensive camo, a few design elements can be seen immediately. The SUV features a relatively long rear door, a sizeable rear quarter glass and a stretched roof profile. These characteristics point towards dimensions exceeding those of the Sonet. The rear section also appears more upright than current Kia compact SUVs – suggesting a notable emphasis on cabin space.
At the front, the test vehicle carries temporary coverings concealing the lighting setup and grille design. However, the bonnet appears flatter and more horizontal than existing Kia compact SUVs. The side profile reveals roof rails and conventional door handles while the alloy wheels appear to be borrowed from the first generation Seltos.

The rear design offers perhaps the biggest clue. Visible through the camouflage is a distinctive vertical LED lighting signature while the tailgate appears wider and squarer than in Sonet or Seltos. It is no secret that Hyundai and Kia are evaluating additional SUV body styles for emerging markets. For instance, Hyundai’s BC4i has already been linked to a crossover positioned between the Venue and Creta taking plenty of inspiration from the Bayon.
The latest Kia test mule could potentially be derived from a similar architecture while receiving brand-specific styling, packaging and feature upgrades. If that proves accurate, the SUV could measure around 4.1 to 4.2 metres in length and occupy the sizeable gap currently separating the Sonet and Seltos especially considering that the Syros has been a moderate success.

Powertrain options are expected to be familiar. Kia could utilise the existing 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine generating 120 hp alongside the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre diesel units already deployed across multiple models. Transmission choices may comprise manual, iMT, automatic and dual-clutch automatic options.
A strong feature package composing dual digital displays, panoramic sunroof, connected car technology, 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS could also be part of the final specification. With the SUV space spreading across multiple size categories, a product positioned between the Sonet and Seltos could allow Kia to target customers seeking additional cabin space and premium equipment without stepping into midsize SUV territory.
