New Kharkhoda facility in Haryana starts with 5 lakh production capacity and will expand to 10 lakh units with a planned investment of Rs. 35,000 crore
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has inaugurated its new vehicle manufacturing facility at IMT Kharkhoda in Haryana. The plant was inaugurated through video conferencing by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum. Spread across 800 acres with an integrated supplier park, the facility starts operations with an annual production capacity of five lakh units and will eventually double to 10 lakh units.
The Kharkhoda plant has been developed under the Suzuki Smart Factory concept and incorporates Industry 5.0 manufacturing practices. The Indo-Japanese brand says advanced digital technologies enable real-time monitoring across production operations to improve safety, product quality and manufacturing efficiency. The factory also deploys human-aware collaborative robots (COBOTS) for closer human-machine interaction on the assembly line.
Once fully expanded, the facility will rank among the world’s largest automobile manufacturing plants. Maruti Suzuki plans to invest Rs. 35,000 crore in the project while the completed facility is expected to generate more than 21,000 jobs. The plant will also play a significant role in the company’s target of achieving four million units of annual production capacity.

Sustainability has received considerable attention at the new manufacturing complex. Maruti Suzuki says the facility meets its entire electricity requirement through renewable energy – combining solar generation with green power procurement. The site currently has 20 MWp of installed solar capacity which will increase to 70 MWp by 2030. A 10 tonne per day biogas plant and a 1 MWh battery energy storage system are also being established.
The Kharkhoda facility also operates as a zero liquid discharge plant – recycling all wastewater generated during manufacturing. Nearly two-thirds of its water requirement is met through recycled water and rainwater harvesting. An in-plant railway siding will also be developed to improve vehicle dispatch efficiency while lowering road congestion and fuel consumption.

Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki said the new facility shows the growing partnership between India and Japan as well as the success of the Make in India initiative. He also noted that the e Vitara, Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle, is manufactured exclusively in India for exports to around 100 international markets. According to Suzuki, India-made vehicles have also helped the company become the largest car importer into Japan.
Maruti Suzuki has also expanded its skill development initiatives alongside the new plant. The company currently operates four Japan-India Institutes for Manufacturing (JIMs) which have collectively trained around 2,600 students. Hostel facilities are also planned at the Sonipat and Manesar centres to support residential technical training. Following the inauguration of Kharkhoda and the upcoming fourth production line at the Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, Maruti Suzuki’s installed annual production capacity is expected to reach 2.9 million units in the current FY.
