Prelude to be one of several new global Hondas planned to be launched in India by the end of the decade

With a heightened emphasis on the Indian market, Honda plans to launch ten models by 2030. The first of these launches is likely to take place this May – the Prelude. After a two-decade hiatus, the Honda Prelude returned for its sixth generation last year and is now on sale internationally. The latest two-door coupe is based on the same platform as the eleventh-generation Honda Civic, which never made it to India due to low demand for global C-segment sedans.

The Honda Prelude is 4,520 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,355 mm tall and has a 2,605 mm wheelbase. These compact dimensions should make it easy to manoeuvre on Indian roads. That said, its 135 mm low ground clearance could prove challenging. The two-door coupe has a 2+2 seating layout, but the rear seat is only suitable for small children.

Honda uses the same two-motor hybrid system in the Prelude as the Civic e:HEV. This powertrain combines an ‘LFC’ 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine with a pair of electric motors—a traction unit and a generator—mounted in-line with the engine crankshaft. The petrol engine produces 104 kW (139 hp) and 182 Nm of torque, while the traction motor, internally called ‘H4’, develops 135 kW (181 hp) and 315 Nm of torque.

The driver can choose from seven levels of regenerative braking via paddles on the steering wheel. The Prelude does not have a traditional multi-ratio gearbox or CVT but does come with a virtual eight-speed transmission that can simulate the characteristics of a manual vehicle. Honda calls this feature ‘S+ Shift’. When activated, which can be done via a large button located on the centre console, the regenerative braking paddles convert into simulated gearshift paddles, with the right paddle allowing upshifts and the left paddle mimicking rev-matched downshifts.

The Honda Prelude takes 8.2 seconds to reach 0 to 100 km/h and maxes out at 188 km/h. These figures indicate it’s not a performance-focused sports car. However, it is quite efficient, delivering a fuel economy of 23.6 km/l, as per Japan’s WLTC. According to Europe’s WLTP, it consumes 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres. The hybrid coupe has a 40-litre fuel tank, which means it can be driven 944 kilometres (WLTC)/769 kilometres (WLTP) without a refuelling stop.

Honda manufactures the Prelude alongside the Civic Type R at the Yorii Plant in Japan. The company will import it to India as a CBU and may price it around Rs. 75 lakh (ex-showroom).
