BSA Scrambler 650 uses the familiar 652 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder DOHC motor producing 44.5 bhp and 55 Nm
BSA’s return to India has been a slow burn but the Scrambler 650 suggests the brand is finally finding its feet. Revealed at the Birmingham Motorcycle Live Show and now officially launched in India, pricing runs from Rs. 3,24,950 for Raven Black through Rs. 3,32,950 for Victor Yellow to Rs. 3,40,950 for Thunder Grey (ex-showroom). Classic Legends is clearly swinging for the Royal Enfield Interceptor Bear 650 with this one, and on paper, the fight looks interesting.
Under the scrambler bodywork sits the familiar 652 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder DOHC motor with four valves and twin spark plugs. Power output is rated at 44.5 bhp with peak torque of 55 Nm arriving at 4,000 rpm and BSA makes no secret of the fact that low and mid-range grunt is where the engine is happiest. A six-speed gearbox handles transmission duties and BSA has hinted the ratios may be tuned to better suit off-road use. Traction control joins switchable rear ABS as part of the electronics package with a single-pod offset instrument cluster rounding off the cockpit.
Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR rubber wraps around 19-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels – a combination that should handle broken tarmac and light trails with reasonable confidence. Ground clearance stands at 187 mm, seat height is 820 mm and the 1,465 mm wheelbase sits in a middle ground between flickability and straight-line stability.

As for the design, BSA has done enough to separate the Scrambler 650 from the Gold Star 650 without losing the family resemblance. A circular headlamp with black casing sets the tone up front, complemented by a tall front mudguard that gives the nose a properly purposeful stance. The braced handlebar, competition-style number boards carrying the ’65’ tag on the sides, upswept exhaust and semi-knobby rubber are other highlights.
Chrome has largely been replaced by blacked-out finishes throughout and the rear end gets a redesigned tail lamp that looks noticeably cleaner than the Gold Star’s. Hardware is sorted across the board. Up front, 41 mm telescopic forks manage damping while twin rear shock absorbers handle the other end. A 320 mm front disc clamped by a Brembo twin-piston floating calliper does the duty – supported by a 255 mm rear disc with a Brembo single-piston unit.

Classic Legends is backing the Scrambler 650 with a four-year or 50,000 km standard warranty extendable to six years, roadside assistance for up to eight years and AMC coverage for five years across 400-plus touchpoints nationwide. Accessories including an engine guard, saddle bag stays, rear rack, bar-end mirrors and a headlight grille are available straight from the dealership.
At Rs. 3.24 lakh, BSA has priced the Scrambler 650 well enough to put real pressure on the Bear 650. Whether buyers choose the British underdog over the Royal Enfield establishment is the real question now.
