Maruti Suzuki Ignis carved a niche for itself with its quirky styling similar to the global model but it could not sustain sales numbers in India

Maruti Suzuki appears to have quietly pulled the plug on the Ignis hatchback in India as production has come to an end. While the model is still listed on the official website, new bookings have largely stopped and only limited stock remains at select dealerships. It points the end of the road for one of the brand’s unconventional small cars sold through the Nexa retail channel.

Launched in January 2017, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis carved a niche for itself with its quirky styling similar to the global model. With upright proportions, SUV-like stance and compact footprint, it stood apart from traditional hatchbacks in the segment. However, despite its unique positioning, it struggled to attract consistent interest over the years and perhaps its pricing was one of the reasons.

Under the hood, the Ignis was powered by a 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine producing 83 hp and 113 Nm of torque coupled with either a five-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. At launch, it was also offered with a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine generating 75 hp but this option was discontinued in 2018 due to weak demand and tightening emission norms.

The petrol-only strategy continued thereafter with the model targetting customers living in cities. In terms of features, the Ignis came equipped with a 7-inch SmartPlay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, automatic climate control, push-button start, steering-mounted controls and LED projector headlamps in higher variants.

Safety equipment included dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and later updates added features like rear parking camera and improved structural compliance. Over its lifecycle, the Ignis received a facelift in 2020 with revised styling elements. A minor safety update was also introduced in 2019 to meet evolving regulations. In recent months, monthly volumes had dropped big time.

The Indo-Japanese manufacturer is expected to replace the Ignis with a new sub-four-metre SUV – internally codenamed Y43. The upcoming model may adopt a more conventional SUV design and could rival popular offerings like the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch. It could share the same three-cylinder engine option found in the Swift and Dzire.
