TVS Ntorq 160 maxi scooter is expected to use a new single-cylinder liquid-cooled 160 cc engine targetting Yamaha Aerox and the likes
TVS Motor Company is said to be preparing a major expansion of its scooter portfolio as reports indicate that a new 160 cc maxi-scooter is currently under development. To be slotted above the popular Ntorq 125 and 150, it could become TVS’ most powerful scooter yet and provide the brand with an entry into the fast growing premium maxi scooter segment.
A market launch is expected sometime next year bringing a new rival to products such as the Yamaha Aerox 155 and Hero Xoom 160 while the Honda Adv 160 and Yamaha NMax 155 are also said to be arriving within the next 12-18 months. It is expected to draw heavily from the Ntorq’s design philosophy which recently spawned a brawnier 150 cc version and perhaps the X too.
Unlike the sporty Ntorq 125 though, the new 160 cc offering is expected to get a more mature maxi-scooter design. Larger bodywork, a wider front apron, a stepped seat, a tall windscreen and a more relaxed riding position are likely. Maxi-scooters have gained popularity due to their ability to combine motorcycle-like highway capability with the practicality of a conventional scooter and those attributes could be the centerpiece of the functional philosophy.

Power is expected to come from a new liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a displacement close to 160 cc. While final specifications remain under wraps, outputs in the region of 15-18 hp and around 14-16 Nm of torque could be expected if TVS aims to directly challenge the Yamaha Aerox 155. A CVT automatic transmission will almost certainly be standard.
The Hosur-based manufacturer may also leverage technology from its motorcycle portfolio to give the scooter a competitive edge. Features likely to be offered include a fully digital TFT instrument console, Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, call and message alerts, ride statistics and multiple riding modes while some electronic aids can’t be ruled out as the company could also introduce traction control, dual-channel ABS and smart key.

Under the bodywork, the Ntorq 160 (perhaps a new name could be introduced too) is expected to ride on larger wheels and a stiffer chassis than the Ntorq 125. Telescopic front forks and twin rear shock absorbers are likely but a single rear monoshock cannot be ruled out of the equation with disc brakes at both ends.
A spacious under-seat storage compartment capable of accommodating at least a full-face helmet, USB charging ports, generous floorboard space and a wide seat could feature prominently. Given the touring-oriented nature of maxi-scooters, TVS could also offer optional accessories such as a top box, windscreen extensions and luggage solutions.
If priced aggressively between Rs. 1.40 lakh and Rs. 1.50 lakh (ex-showroom), the Ntorq 160 could become a defining product launch from TVS in recent years.
