Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) to introduce 5 new locally manufactured models, all with a length of over four metres, by 2029

While Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has largely relied on rebadged Maruti Suzuki models for growth over the recent years, moving forward, it will depend more on indigenously developed products. Over the next 2-3 years, the company is likely to launch five new models, most of which will be original Toyota products.

1. Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella

Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella is a corporate cousin of the Maruti e Vitara, offered with the same batteries, powertrains, and features. It delivers the same range of 440 kilometres in the standard-range variant and 543 kilometres in the extended-range variant. The main difference is that it features a softer front design, embodying Toyota’s signature hammerhead theme. The sleek headlamps, upright nose section, and cleaner front bumper lend it a more polished appearance.

2. Next-gen Toyota Fortuner

Sometime in the first half of 2027, TKM could launch the third-generation Fortuner, which is currently being developed and tested in Thailand. The next-gen Fortuner will have a sharper and more aggressive exterior. Inside, it will be a noticeably more upmarket SUV, especially on the inside, both aesthetically and functionally.

The next-gen Fortuner will likely come with a host of major upgrades, including a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, electronic power steering, ventilated front seats, Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, and maybe even a panoramic sunroof. The engine and transmission choices are unlikely to be any different from the current model.

Sometime in the second half of 2027 or 2028, TKM will launch a new electric MPV that will be closely related to a Maruti Suzuki model codenamed ‘YMC’. The road testing of the latter has just started, and the Toyota version could join soon. This model will likely share its powertrains and batteries with the Urban Cruiser Ebella and compete with the Kia Carens Clavis EV.

4. Toyota Land Cruiser FJ

In 2028, Toyota is expected to launch the Land Cruiser FJ, its new C-segment body-on-frame SUV positioned below the Fortuner. It will be manufactured locally and likely be offered with a 2TR-FE 2.7-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that produces 164 hp and 245 Nm of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system could be standard. Reports say hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants are also planned.

The Toyota Corolla Cross is coming to India, but likely in the next generation, possibly in 2029. It will be manufactured locally and be based on a new version of the TNGA-C platform. The new C-SUV could be offered in a seven-seat version in at least one of the configurations, and a choice of petrol and petrol-electric hybrid variants.
