In the table of top 25 most sold cars in May 2026, Maruti Suzuki Dzire led the way ahead of its siblings Fronx and Ertiga
As one might expect, SUVs continued to dominate customer preferences across segments in the month of May 2026. Utility vehicles accounted for 18 of the 25 best-selling models during the month representing 72 per cent of the rankings. Despite the SUV surge, the Dzire retained its crown as the country’s most sold PV while Maruti Suzuki itself placed an impressive 11 models in the top 25 list.
The sub-four-metre span recorded a total of 24,546 units – posting a healthy 36 per cent year-on-year increase. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx followed in second position with 20,686 units and a notable 52 per cent growth while the Ertiga MPV completed an all-Maruti podium by recording sales of 20,350 units. The trio models alone contributed more than 65,000 units during the month.
Tata Motors continued its healthy run with the Punch and Nexon securing fourth and fifth positions respectively. The Punch recorded 20,208 units and emerged as one of the fastest-growing high volume SUVs with a 54 per cent increas, while the Nexon followed closely with 19,100 units and a 46 per cent improvement. Maruti’s Baleno, WagonR and Swift occupied the next three positions showcasing the brand’s popularity in the entry-level segments.

Mahindra’s highest-ranked model was the Scorpio at ninth position with 15,774 units while Hyundai’s Creta rounded out the top ten with 15,253 units. Further down the order, models such as the Venue, Seltos, Sonet, Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Innova acted as a testament to the growing strength of the SUV and MPV segments across multiple price brackets in the domestic market.
The biggest gainers last month included the Alto which nearly doubled its sales with a 99 per cent increase. The Grand Vitara followed with an 80 per cent jump while the Kia Seltos posted 74 per cent growth. The Baleno and Venue also recorded appreciable gains of 58 per cent and 56 per cent respectively. The recently introduced products such as the Victoris and Sierra also managed to secure places in the top 25 rankings.

Not every model enjoyed growth during the month as the Mahindra XUV 3XO recorded the steepest decline at 16 per cent followed by the Maruti Suzuki Brezza with a 14 per cent drop. The Hyundai Creta also witnessed a decline compared to the same month last year despite remaining among the country’s ten best-selling vehicles.
