Next-gen Hyundai Bayon could be the brand’s blockbuster launch in India this festive season and hold a significant export potential

The next-gen Hyundai Bayon, scheduled to be launched in India in the second half of the year, will be much larger than initially reported. It will be a new mid-size SUV slotted below the Creta.

The first-generation Hyundai Bayon, which is a Euro-focused model, is 4,180 mm long, 1,775 mm wide, and 1,500 mm tall and has a 2,580 mm wheelbase. Earlier reports said that the second-generation model, which would be conceived keeping in mind the requirements of consumers in India and other emerging markets as well, would be a smaller, “compact” SUV challenging the Maruti Fronx.

The Bayon being downsized to a sub-4 metre model in the second generation would have been unusual. Most cars in today’s day and age only grow with each generation, and a 180 mm reduction in length would be just bizarre regardless. Now, it has emerged that the second-generation Bayon will indeed measure more than four metres in length, around 4.18 metres like the outgoing model, to be more specific. That would make it a “mid-size” SUV by Indian classification.

On 8 May, during Hyundai Motor India’s Q4 FY2026 earnings conference call, MD and CEO Tarun Garg announced that the company will launch a new mid-size SUV in FY2027 (April 2026-March 2027). “The ICE SUV will further reinforce our position in the mid-SUV category,” he said. “When I say mid-SUV, I mean more than 4 metres,” he added.

Garg said that the upcoming mid-size SUV will be a completely new nameplate, all but confirming he was referring to the next-gen Bayon. Hyundai will likely offer the new model with a naturally aspirated petrol engine and also a bi-fuel petrol-CNG engine. The CNG variant should feature a dual-cylinder layout to ensure minimum impact on the boot space.

For those wondering whether the second-gen Bayon would be too close to the second-gen Creta and cannibalise its sales, Hyundai plans to replace the latter with a significantly bigger, third-gen model in the second half of 2027. The next-gen Bayon would make sense for customers who want an urban cruiser that is not as small and/or basic as the second-gen Venue but also not as big and/or expensive as the third-gen Creta.

The arrival of the next-gen Bayon would give Hyundai more headroom to price the next-gen Creta higher, which would be reasonable considering its bigger size, more advanced platform, and significant technological upgrades over the outgoing model.
