Honda has reportedly identified India as one of its key growth regions globally; company plans to aggressively expand its SUV and electrified vehicle portfolio
A locally developed electric SUV, more than ten new models before the end of the decade and a renewed hybrid strategy form the backbone of Honda’s latest launch announcement. After years of relying on a limited lineup dominated by sedans, the Japanese manufacturer is preparing a new product offensive as it looks to rebuild its position in the rapidly growing domestic PV market.
Honda has reportedly identified India as one of its key growth regions globally and the company plans to aggressively expand its SUV and electrified vehicle portfolio over the next few years. Unlike earlier phases where India mainly received adapted global products, future development programmes are expected to involve higher localisation and more India-based engineering right from the beginning.
The first signs of this transition are already visible. Honda recently revealed the ZR-V Hybrid for India while simultaneously launching the updated City facelift. The ZR-V becomes Honda’s new flagship SUV in India and arrives as a completely built import with deliveries scheduled to begin from July 2026. Powered by a 2.0-litre strong hybrid setup developing 184 hp and 315 Nm, the SUV is expected to rival Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Kodiaq, etc.

However, premium imports alone are not expected to increase Honda’s future volumes. A locally developed electric SUV based on the Elevate is already understood to be under development and it will arrive before the end of FY27 or a while later. It will become the brand’s first mass market EV for India while also functioning as an export product for overseas markets.
Hybrid technology is also expected to spread rapidly across its future range. The company appears convinced that strong hybrids still make strong commercial sense for India due to charging infrastructure limitations and continued fuel efficiency demand. The City hybrid already delivers claimed efficiency of 27.26 kmpl and similar systems are likely to feature in future SUVs as well.

Honda is also preparing a return to the compact SUV category. A new sub-four-metre SUV is reportedly planned for launch later this decade signifying its return to the segment after the WR-V’s exit. Another midsize SUV positioned above the Elevate is also believed to be under development and could target products such as Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Hyundai Creta.
Honda has reportedly started expanding software and digital operations in India through a Bengaluru based innovation division while plans for captive finance operations and integrated ownership platforms are also understood to be in the pipeline. Currently, volumes remain relatively low with domestic sales heavily dependent on Amaze and City for Honda.
SUVs now account for a major portion of the passenger vehicle market and Honda’s dependence on sedans gradually reduced its market presence over the past several years. The forthcoming expansion cycle may correcting that imbalance. With new hybrids, additional SUVs and a locally developed EV scheduled across the next few years, Honda is preparing its biggest India product overhaul in a long time.
