Following Tata Sierra, Tata Sumo, the company’s longest-running nameplate in the Indian car market, could be revived for a premium SUV
Tata Motors has confirmed plans to launch ten new cars, including six ICE models and four electric models, by March 2031. One of these new products could be an all-new Tata Sumo, reviving the brand’s iconic Mahindra Bolero rival, albeit with a different positioning.
First introduced in 1994, the Tata Sumo was the brand’s longest-running model in India until it was discontinued in 2019. Tata Motors revived the Sierra nameplate last year and could be considering a similar plan for the Sumo now. This time around, though, the Sumo could have a much different character underneath a familiar shell, targeted more at urban drivers.
Tata Motors is developing a new compact SUV that will likely be positioned between the Nexon and the Sierra. Codenamed ‘Tata Scarlet’, this model will have an authentic SUV character, featuring a squarish exterior, a high ground clearance, and rugged styling elements.

It will still be a monocoque platform-based product, though, focusing more on comfort, efficiency, and road manners than off-road capability. Whether that platform will be shared with the next-gen Nexon or be an adaptation of the all-new Sierra’s ARGOS remains to be seen.
Tata Motors typically develops its new ICE models now with a plan for an electric derivative, and the Tata Scarlet is unlikely to be an exception. Potential rivals like the Renault Kiger, Kia Syros, and the production version of the Mahindra Vision.S have already been either confirmed to be offered or be technically ready for full electrification. At least the electric variant could be ready for all-wheel drive capability, with a combination of front and rear electric motors.

Tata Sumo could be a fitting choice for a product like the Tata Scarlet. The revival of the iconic nameplate has been a popular subject of discussion among fans for several years now, and with the all-new Tata Sierra’s launch and the Tata Scarlet’s unofficially revealed details, it certainly looks possible. If Tata Motors indeed has such a plan, it could preview a concept version of the Scarlet with the Sumo name at Auto Expo 2027 to gauge consumer interest and study its true potential.
