Honda’s global C- and D-segment cars could challenge premium cars from Volkswagen, Skoda, and Toyota in India in the future
Discontinued in 2020, the tenth-generation Civic, tenth-generation Accord, and fifth-generation CR-V were Honda’s last truly global models in India. The company will restart sales of imported cars beginning with the ZR-V in July and has signalled an interest in relaunching the Civic, Accord, and CR-V in the coming years.
Briefing journalists about Honda’s product strategy at the debut of the ZR-V, Takashi Nakajima, the President and CEO of its Indian subsidiary, revealed that the new SUV is a “test case” for a full-fledged re-entry into global C- and D-segments. Nakajima said that Honda is “constantly considering” relaunching cars imported as completely knocked-down (CKD) kits for local assembly, including the Civic, Accord, and CR-V.
Honda imports the ZR-V as a CBU from Japan, where it manufactures the model at its factory in Yorii, Saitama Prefecture. Even the old global Hondas that were imported in CKD kits and assembled locally used to be quite expensive, so the fully imported ZR-V would no doubt be a pricey affair. However, the company is likely to use the ZR-V mainly for bringing excitement back into its showrooms as it begins its new product offensive and does not expect big volumes.

Should Honda relaunch Civic, CR-V, and Accord, it will likely have a higher expectation compared to the ZR-V on the sales front and would have to price them right for the same. The Japanese automaker would thus need to import them in CKD kits and assemble them locally.
Honda used to assemble its imported cars from CKD kits at the Greater Noida plant in Uttar Pradesh, but it ceased operations there in 2020. The Tapukara plant in Rajasthan is its only car production site currently operational in India, but it is not equipped for CKD assembly. Nakajima said that he cannot reveal whether Honda would need to reopen the Greater Noida plant for CKD assembly. He did point out that he has a responsibility to improve capacity utilisation at the Tapukara plant.

Globally, the CR-V and Accord have been in their sixth and eleventh generations since 2022. The Civic moved to its eleventh generation in 2021 and will be the first among these global products to get a complete makeover soon, with which it will enter its twelfth generation.
At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show in October, Honda gave Indian journalists a test drive in a prototype of the next-gen Civic’s hybrid variant. There were rumours from this event that the company didn’t plan to launch the next-gen Civic in India but was planning to bring the CR-V, presumably the current model, in a hybrid variant with an e-AWD configuration by 2027.
