Mercedes-Benz has today announced the launch of a new variant of its flagship limousine range in India with the arrival of the S 450 e. The debut of plug-in hybrid technology in the S-Class lineup has been described as the biggest mid-life enhancement ever carried out within a single S-Class generation by the brand. It is priced at at Rs. 2.20 crore for the Launch Edition.

Meanwhile, it starts from Rs. 2.38 crore for the Manufaktur Edition (both ex-showroom). The luxury sedan utilises a six-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor to produce a maximum power output of 435 hp and 680 Nm of peak torque. The customer deliveries are scheduled to commence during the final quarter of 2026 while bookings have already opened nationwide.

A major talking point is the ability to travel considerable distances without consuming petrol. Energy is supplied by a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack paired with a 120 kW electric motor capable of generating 163 hp and 440 Nm on its own. Mercedes-Benz quotes a WLTP-certified electric driving capability of around 115 km – allowing everyday drives to be completed using battery power alone.

Once battery charge drops, the combustion engine kicks in. The petrol component of the powertrain is the latest evolution of Mercedes-Benz’s 3.0-litre M256 inline-six turbocharged engine. Independently, it develops 326 hp and 540 Nm. Working alongside the electric motor through a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, total system output climbs to 435 hp and 680 Nm.

The S 450 e comes equipped with air suspension as standard while rear-wheel steering is also included offering 4.5 degrees of articulation in standard form and up to 10 degrees through an optional upgrade.
