BYD Q1R is a 40-tonne gross combination weight rated electric tractor powered by a motor producing 282 bhp and 450 Nm of torque
A BYD electric heavy duty truck has been caught on camera being transported on a flatbed on Indian roads with the BYD badging clearly visible on the rear mudguards. The cab-over design and overall proportions point toward the BYD Q1R – an all-electric vehicle which was previously supplied to the Indian market in significant numbers.
This is not the first time BYD’s electric trucks have operated in India. Back in 2023, Adani Group placed a large scale order for 400 BYD Q1R electric vehicles for port operations across four of its facilities. The first batch of 304 units was shipped in early 2023 with the Katupalli port being among the first to put them into service. The Q1R was described at the time as the first large scale electric heavy truck deployment for port operations in India.
The Q1R is a 40-tonne gross combination weight rated electric tractor powered by a motor producing 282 bhp and 450 Nm of torque. It runs on a 255 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery – the same Blade Battery chemistry that underpins BYD’s passenger vehicles – offering a range of around 200 km on a full charge.

Charging takes around 2.5 hours using a 120 kW DC fast charger or around 7 hours on a 40 kW AC setup. The BYD Q1R’s top speed is rated at 85 kmph and the truck is equipped with pneumatic disc brakes, regenerative braking and ABS amongst other features. BYD India’s commercial vehicle business has been active well before its passenger car division gained attention.
The Chennai-based subsidiary has supplied electric buses to cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kochi and the truck business – while less visible to the general public – has been making moves, particularly in the port and logistics sector where the predictable routes and depot-based charging make electric powertrains a practical fit.

The new sighting suggests BYD’s electric truck business in India continues to see active deployment. Whether this represents a new batch for existing customers like Adani or a new fleet operator entering the electric logistics space is not immediately known from the images but the presence of what appear to be brand new units on a transporter points to ongoing commercial activity in this segment for BYD in the country.
