New Mitsubishi Pajero is expected to track back to traditional body-on-frame construction at a time when most manufacturers are moving towards monocoque platforms

Mitsubishi seems to be planning to re-enter the spotlight in the global SUV space with a brand-new off-roader slated for debut in 2026 and all signs point towards the revival of the Pajero. While the Japanese manufacturer has not officially confirmed the badge, the description of the upcoming model as a “true cross-country SUV” hints at a return to its go-anywhere philosophy that once defined the legendary brand.

The new SUV is expected to track back to traditional body-on-frame construction at a time when most manufacturers are moving towards monocoque platforms. The underpinnings will likely be shared with Mitsubishi’s latest Triton pickup which means the SUV will benefit from a highly durable ladder-frame chassis engineered for serious off-road purposes.

As for the performance, Mitsubishi is expected to equip the SUV with a familiar yet updated powertrain lineup. A 2.4-litre twin turbocharged diesel engine may serve as the mainstay. In addition, a plug-in hybrid configuration could also be introduced in select markets. The inclusion of an evolved Super Select four-wheel-drive system would further enhance its off-road credentials.

The upcoming SUV is expected to gain an upright stance. Early indications suggest a muscular exterior with a prominent grille, squared-off proportions and body cladding. LED lighting elements and newly styled alloy wheels are possible as well. Expect a significant upgrade in terms of features including larger infotainment displays, digital instrumentation, connected car tech and possibly advanced driver assistance systems.

It may also boast generous cabin space. For India, this development carries added importance. Mitsubishi has maintained a minimal presence in the country in recent years – particularly after stricter emission norms came into effect. The arrival of a flagship SUV with off-road credentials could serve as a turning point but no official confirmation has been made yet.

The company is preparing a serious contender that will combine heritage, capability and modern engineering – potentially bringing back the essence of one of its most iconic SUVs in an all-new iteration.
