After three years of uncertainty surrounding the Toyota Corolla Cross launch in India, fresh reports suggest the project is back on track. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is reportedly going ahead with the plan to bring the global SUV to Indian showrooms.

Globally, the Toyota Corolla Cross is a C-SUV positioned between the C-HR and RAV4, neither of which is sold in India. Based on the TNGA-C platform, it measures 4,460 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height. It has a 2,640 wheelbase and is only available as a five-seater.

Initially, Toyota was working on a three-row version with a stretched wheelbase, and that was the configuration TKM planned to launch. Codenamed ‘Toyota 340 D’, the long-wheelbase, three-row Corolla Cross derived from the current, first-generation model was originally scheduled to enter production in June 2026 but was later cancelled.

New reports say the Toyota Corolla Cross will now be launched in India in 2028 or 2029. The first-generation model was introduced in July 2020 and received a facelift in 2024. It should have transitioned to its second generation by 2028, and this time around, Toyota could engineer the vehicle from the outset to have two different wheelbases, with the longer one accommodating a third row of seats.

The company will likely keep the requirements of Indian customers in mind, including comfort features such as ventilated seats and a boss mode to adjust the front passenger seat from the second-row seat behind it.

TKM may directly launch the next-gen Corolla Cross. The company will likely offer it in petrol and petrol-electric full-hybrid variants, both with a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated engine under the hood to keep the costs in check. It could also launch a flex-fuel version eventually, depending on market trends.

Production of the Toyota Corolla Cross in India will likely take place at TKM’s upcoming manufacturing facility in the Bidkin Industrial Area on the outskirts of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar in Maharashtra. The company plans commercial operations at this facility with an annual capacity of 100,000 vehicles in the first half of 2029 and has confirmed that the first product will be a new SUV.
