Hyundai Motor and TVS Motor have partnered in a decisive step towards reshaping last-mile mobility in India by entering into a Joint Development Agreement focused on electric three-wheelers. The collaboration points towards a transition from early stage ideas to product development with both brands coming together to create a purpose-built solution.
The groundwork for this partnership was laid when the two companies showcased a futuristic electric three-wheeler concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. That concept now moves closer to reality as the companies look to bring a production-ready vehicle specifically to India’s unique road and usage conditions. Given the country’s position as the largest three-wheeler market globally, the timing appears well calibrated.
Unlike a conventional collaboration, responsibilities here are defined to their strengths. Hyundai will take charge of design direction and core development – drawing from its global engineering expertise and focus on user centric mobility solutions. The company’s emphasis on safety, comfort and innovation is expected to shape the overall product architecture.
TVS Motor, meanwhile, will anchor the project from a local execution standpoint. With extensive experience in the electric three-wheeler space and a deep understanding of customer expectations in India, the brand will contribute its platform and engineering capabilities. It will also oversee manufacturing operations within the country and handle market deployment including exports to select global regions.
The vehicle is being engineered to tackle real-world challenges such as uneven roads, heavy rainfall and high ambient temperatures. The earlier concept hinted at features like adjustable ground clearance, improved cooling systems for battery efficiency and a driver-friendly cabin designed for long hours of operation.
Flexibility is another key aspect as the platform is expected to support multiple use cases. From passenger commuting to cargo logistics and emergency applications, the modular interior layout will allow the vehicle to meet different requirements. The versatility could make it a compelling option for both individual operators and fleet buyers.
By sourcing and producing a significant portion of components within India, the partnership will look to reduce production costs and consolidate the domestic supply chain, and thus creating employment opportunities and ensuring better service support through easier access to spare parts. In addition, executives from both companies have emphasised that the initiative goes beyond launching a new product.
With cross functional teams already in place, development timelines are being accelerated alongside regulatory processes. Once it reaches the market, this jointly developed electric three-wheeler could become a key player in the three-wheeler category.
