Nissan’s iconic SUV with a history of more than 70 years could finally make it to India later this year

The Nissan Patrol, the brand’s full-size SUV that competes with the Toyota Land Cruiser 300, is being strongly considered for India. The Japanese automaker is likely to bring its flagship SUV as a halo product to our market, aimed at enhancing its brand image.

On Tuesday, Nissan announced plans to axe 11 models globally as part of its new long-term strategy, but the Patrol, being an iconic model, is making the cut. The company has categorised it as a “Heartbeat” product with strong emotional value. In India, it would be one of the priciest vehicles from a mainstream brand.

Following the announcement, Nissan Chief Performance Officer Guillaume Cartier said that the company is evaluating some of its iconic models to bring excitement to its Indian showrooms. Importing CBUs leveraging the government’s GSR 870 (E) rule is on the table, he added.

Thierry Sabbagh, Divisional Vice President and President, Middle East, KSA, CIS and India – Nissan and Infiniti, said that Nissan is looking at ways to expand the Patrol’s availability to other markets, including India. The company has discussed the possibility of bringing it to India with local dealers, and they are pumped up.

Cartier admitted that the X-Trail’s steep pricing did not work well, but in the case of the Patrol, Nissan is focusing on offering a well-equipped product that delivers strong value rather than fixating on a price. This suggests the Patrol, too, would be a costly model. In the UAE, the full-size SUV’s prices range from AED 239,900 (Rs. 60.85 lakh) to AED 389,900 (Rs. 98.89 lakh). In India, we expect only the top one or two trims to be offered, priced close to Rs. 2.0 crore (ex-showroom).

Also marketed as the Nissan Armada in some markets, the Nissan Patrol is now in its seventh generation. It is available with 3.8-litre naturally aspirated and 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engines. The former produces 316 hp and 386 Nm of torque, and the latter develops 425 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The 3.8-litre engine delivers a fuel economy of 9.5 km/l, while the 3.5-litre unit returns 10.1 km/l. A 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD system are standard.
