New modular architecture from JSW MG Motor, Adapt, will underpin future electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and range-extender models for India

JSW MG Motor India has unveiled the Adapt (Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology) today in India as it has introduced what it calls India’s first modular architecture capable of accommodating battery electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and range-extender electric vehicles (REEVs) on a common platform.

The announcement also confirms that one all-new electric vehicle and one plug-in hybrid SUV based on the new architecture will reach the Indian market before the end of FY2026-27. The architecture arrives at a time when MG is consolidating its electrified vehicle portfolio buoyed by the success of the Windsor EV while leveraging its global synergies.

The company is working to enter the plug-in hybrid segment before introducing another battery electric vehicle this FY. In contrary to developing separate architectures for different propulsion systems, Adapt has been conceived as a single modular base capable of accommodating multiple technologies enabling future products to share common engineering while appealing to varying customer needs.

The first production application will be the plug-in hybrid SUV scheduled for launch shortly. The model is widely expected to draw heavily from the Wuling Starlight 560 sold overseas – pairing a petrol engine with a substantially larger battery pack capable of covering longer distances on electric power alone before the engine begins generating additional energy.

A pure battery electric model could be based on the same SUV too. Adapt integrates a dedicated hybrid petrol engine, dedicated battery system, India’s first 10-in-1 Intelligent Electric Drive Unit and what MG describes as the world’s first Electromagnetic Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. The compact drive unit combines multiple electrical components into a single assembly – reducing packaging requirements while increasing operational efficiency.

The dedicated hybrid engine has also been developed specifically for electrified applications putting emphasis on thermal efficiency and lower fuel consumption. Power delivery is managed through an Intelligent Energy Management System which continuously evaluates operating conditions before automatically selecting one of four driving strategies. Pure Electric Drive relies entirely on battery power during low-speed operation while Series Hybrid Drive allows the petrol engine to generate electricity for the electric motor without directly driving the wheels.

Parallel Hybrid Drive enables both power sources to operate simultaneously whenever stronger acceleration is required whereas Engine Direct Drive engages the petrol engine more directly during sustained highway driving to maximise frugality. The architecture has also been configured to accommodate range-extender electric vehicle technology. The combustion engine functions exclusively as a generator while propulsion remains the responsibility of the electric motor.

The arrangement enables an electric driving character for most operating conditions while extending overall driving range once battery charge reduces. MG further says the architecture has been engineered to shorten product development cycles while enabling higher levels of structural flexibility. The company also claims gains in driving range, charging capability, refinement and safety through common engineering across future products.
