In the list of top 10 hatchbacks in May 2026, the first five positions were occupied by Maruti Suzuki as the brand featured six models overall
The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, occupied the first five positions and placed six models overall in the top ten sales chart in May 2026. The Baleno emerged as the highest-selling hatchback during the month while WagonR and Swift were not far behind. Several affordable models also posted substantial year-on-year gains.
The Baleno secured the top position after recording 18,398 units – registering a 58 per cent jump over May last year. Sold through Nexa dealerships, the premium hatchback is powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 90 hp and 113 Nm while a CNG version is also available. Equipment such as a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system, six airbags, 360-degree camera and head-up display has helped Baleno remain one of the consistent volume generators in the segment.
Just 322 units behind sat the WagonR with 18,076 dispatches. The tall-boy hatchback continues to attract buyers with its spacious cabin and multiple powertrain options. The model is available with 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines alongside factory-fitted CNG technology. The Swift completed the podium with 17,519 units. The latest-gen employs a new three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine while also offering a CNG derivative.

The biggest percentage increase among the top ten came from the S-Presso which surged by 254 per cent to 6,388 units. The Alto was another top performer after nearly doubling volumes to 9,887 units. Both models cater primarily to first-time car owners. Hyundai’s i20 finished sixth with 4,749 units and a 16 per cent increase on a YoY basis last month.
The premium hatchback is available with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and is expected to receive a completely new generation in the near future. Lower down the order, Tata Tiago registered 4,178 units while Toyota Glanza ended the month with 3,198 units. Both models witnessed declines of 35 per cent and 33 per cent respectively.
Maruti Suzuki’s Celerio posted a healthy 62 per cent rise to 3,018 units while Hyundai Grand i10 Nios rounded out the rankings with 2,920 units as the Altroz finished just outside the top ten. Huge gains recorded by several compact hatchbacks indicate that affordable passenger vehicles still command substantial volumes despite the growing popularity of SUVs.
