Three new plug-in hybrid SUVs to be launched in India in the coming months, all developed by Chinese automakers
Plug-in hybrid technology gained popularity in European and North American markets over the last decade, but in India, it still remains a niche, being mostly limited to luxury models. In the coming months, three new plug-in hybrid SUVs will be launched in India, and one of them will likely be among the most affordable PHEVs ever seen here.
1. MG 520
JSW MG Motors is working on a new SUV positioned above the Hector/Hector Plus duo, codenamed ‘520,’ and it plans to launch this model in plug-in hybrid and pure electric variants. The company is set to unveil the new SUV on 16 July, and the plug-in hybrid variant could be the first one to arrive in showrooms.

Derived from the Wuling Starlight 560, which is available in 5- and 7-seat versions, the new MG SUV will compete with the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Mahindra XEV 9S. It may only be offered in the 7-seat version here, though. In the Chinese model, the plug-in hybrid variant uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that develops 78 kW (105 hp) and 130 Nm of torque and an electric motor that generates 145 kW (194 hp) and 230 Nm of torque. A 20.5 kWh LFP battery pack powers the latter, and it gives a pure electric range of 125 kilometres, albeit as per CLTC.

2. JSW SUV
JSW Motors, JSW Group’s new standalone automotive arm, will enter the Indian car market with a plug-in hybrid D-segment SUV derived from Chinese automaker Chery’s Jetour Traveller C-DM. This model should employ a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors. A 27.2 kWh LFP battery pack will likely power the electric motors and deliver a zero-emission range of over 100 kilometres.

The new Toyota Fortuner rival will be imported in knocked-down kits from China and be assembled at JSW Motors’ upcoming factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. It will likely be launched by September.

3. BYD Seal U

The BYD Seal U is also a D-segment plug-in hybrid SUV, but more of a road-focused model. It should also be imported in knocked-down kits from China, with final assembly taking place in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. BYD offers the Seal U in several configurations internationally, but in India, it will use a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a single electric motor, with the latter powered by an 18.3 kWh LFP battery pack. The Seal U will be capable of travelling 126 kilometres with its engine shut off. BYD could launch it in the third quarter of the year.
