In the top 15 car brands charts for May 2026 based on Vahan registrations, Maruti Suzuki sat ahead of Tata Motors and Mahindra

Vehicle registrations in India remained on a positive note in May 2026 as Vahan data showed 3,97,301 vehicles registered across the country with a healthy 23.9 per cent year-on-year increase over the 3,20,612 units recorded in the same month last year. While most major manufacturers posted growth compared to May 2025, the rankings also revealed changes in market share.

Maruti Suzuki stayed put dominating the auto sector with 1,65,441 registrations – accounting for a commanding 41.6 per cent market share. The country’s largest carmaker recorded 33.2 per cent year-on-year growth and expanded its market share by 2.9 percentage points compared to May 2025. More importantly, Maruti Suzuki registered nearly three times the volume of its nearest rival.

The battle for second position saw Tata Motors edge ahead of Mahindra. Tata registered 54,151 vehicles and recorded a notable 39.3 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Mahindra followed with 51,745 registrations and 7.8 per cent growth. Despite maintaining third position, Mahindra witnessed the biggest market share decline among the top five brands – falling from 15.0 per cent to 13.0 per cent.

Hyundai retained fourth position with 46,223 registrations while Toyota rounded out the top five with 26,415 units. Both manufacturers posted positive year-on-year growth of 12.8 per cent and 6.2 per cent respectively but their market shares declined slightly due to the faster expansion of the overall market. Kia continued its strong run in sixth place with 24,647 registrations and an impressive 33.6 per cent growth rate.

Down the road, Renault and Nissan emerged as two of the fastest-growing brands. Renault registrations jumped by 70.6 per cent to 4,217 units while Nissan posted an even stronger 84.4 per cent increase with 2,959 registrations courtesy of their recent launches. VinFast also made its presence felt with 1,238 registrations as the Vietnamese manufacturer continues to expand its footprint in India.

Not every brand enjoyed a positive month. Skoda and Volkswagen collectively registered 8,377 units – down 10.3 per cent year-on-year. MG recorded a marginal 1.7 per cent decline while Honda slipped by 0.9 per cent. Jeep witnessed the sharpest fall among the listed manufacturers with registrations dropping 30.9 per cent to just 208 units.
