A new report suggests India’s electric vehicle market could reach 30.4 million annual unit sales by 2032 if demand, charging infrastructure and policy support continue to improve

India’s electric vehicle journey has only just begun, but the next six years could completely transform the market. According to a new industry report, annual EV sales in the country could touch 30.4 million units by 2032 under a high-growth scenario. That would represent a twelve-fold jump from current levels and underline just how quickly the segment is expected to evolve.

The projection is based on multiple factors coming together rather than one single catalyst. Growing charging infrastructure, a wider choice of products and falling battery costs are expected to encourage more buyers to switch to electric vehicles. Government policies and localisation of key components are also likely to play a major role in keeping prices in check over the next few years.

The biggest contributor to this number are going to be two-wheelers. Electric scooters have already become a common sight in several Indian cities and there are new models coming almost every month. Last mile delivery vehicles, electric three-wheelers, buses and trucks are gradually showing acceptance. These have started to become a common sight.

That said, there are still a few hurdles to overcome. Public charging infrastructure remains inconsistent outside major cities and many buyers continue to have concerns around charging time, battery life and resale value. Not only do OEMs need to increase the charging network, they need to increase the number of chargers at each location as well. The growing number of EVs is going to increase wait times at public stations. The pace at which these issues are addressed will ultimately determine whether India can achieve the report’s most optimistic forecast.

The encouraging part is that the industry no longer revolves around a handful of manufacturers. Established carmakers are expanding their EV portfolios while newer brands continue to bring fresh products to the market. The segment is getting competitive. At the same time, battery manufacturing, charging networks and component localisation are attracting significant investments, creating an ecosystem that barely existed a few years ago.

Whether the 30.4 million-unit mark is eventually achieved remains to be seen, but the direction is quite clear. Electric vehicles are steadily moving from being a niche choice to a mainstream one. If infrastructure keeps pace with new product launches, the next decade could prove to be the biggest transformation the Indian automotive industry has witnessed in recent years.
