Next-gen Nissan Terrano could compete with the Toyota Fortuner, MG Majestor, and JSW Motors’ Chery Jetour Traveller C-DM-derived SUV in India
At Auto China 2026 last month, Nissan unveiled its vision for the next-gen Terrano as a body-on-frame D-segment SUV. According to a report from Autocar India, the production version of this concept is being evaluated for the Indian market and could be launched here as a Toyota Fortuner rival.
Sold between 2013 and 2020, the Nissan Terrano is widely remembered in India as a corporate cousin of the first-gen Renault Duster. Globally, however, it carries a much higher significance, having been mostly associated with a body-on-frame SUV through the 1990s and early 2000s.
With demand for rugged, off-road-focused SUVs rising in many international markets, Nissan is planning to reinvent the Terrano as a modern lifestyle model using its original ladder-frame-based formula. The company will utilise the same platform that debuted in the Dongfeng Z9 mid-size pickup truck. The Nissan Frontier Pro and Nissan Navara Pro manufactured by Zhengzhou Nissan, a joint venture between Dongfeng and Nissan, are based on the same platform.

Nissan showcased the next-gen Terrano concept with a plug-in hybrid system and wants to bring its production version to India with the same type of electrified powertrain. We expect it to use a combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a permanent magnet synchronous motor.
The petrol engine could produce 105 kW (141 hp) and 220 Nm of torque and the electric motor could be tuned to develop 156 kW (209 hp) and 350 Nm of torque. This setup could deliver 320 kW (429 hp) of total power and 800 Nm of total torque. Nissan may use a second electric motor that produces 92 kW (123 hp) and 100 Nm of torque as a generator that either recharges the traction battery pack or directly supplies electric energy to the propulsion motor based on the driving situation.

The traction battery pack will likely feature NMC cells and have an energy storage capacity of 33 kWh, enough to cover a distance of well over 100 kilometres in EV mode, as per NEDC. It will likely support DC charging, with a 30-80% session taking 30 minutes.
The next-gen Frontier’s plug-in hybrid variant should come with vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) bidirectional charging functions, with a peak output of 6 kW. The Nissan Terrano Plug-in hybrid could debut in production form in 2027 and arrive in India sometime in 2028.

Nissan may import CKD kits of this model and get them assembled at the Renault plant in Chennai to price it competitively. The Terrano PHEV could be one of several new Nissans co-developed with Dongfeng coming to our market in the future. The Japanese automaker is also evaluating the Patrol for India and could launch it later this year.
