BYD’s Toyota Land Cruiser 300 rival virtually seen at the Intellectual Property India office, spurring rumours of an India launch plan
The Denza B8, originally introduced as the Fangchengbao Bao 8 in China in April 2024, is one of the most off-road-capable vehicles under BYD’s wide brand matrix. The company recently secured exclusive rights to its design in India.
BYD had filed an application to protect the Fangchengbao Bao 8/Denza B8’s design with IP India in September 2024. Earlier this month, the company was finally granted the patent for its design. Such filings are a common industry practice to protect intellectual property and don’t necessarily signal a local launch plan.
The Chinese automaker uses the Fangchengbao Bao 8 name only in China. In all its international markets, spanning Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Oceania, and North America, the company markets it as the Denza B8.

The Denza B8 is a plug-in hybrid SUV with a traditional body-on-frame construction. It is 5,195 mm long, 1,994 mm wide, and 1,905 mm tall, and has a 2,920 mm wheelbase. The off-road-oriented SUV has a 34º approach angle, a 35º departure angle, and a 26º ramp-over angle, and it offers 310 mm of ground clearance.
BYD equips the Denza B8 with a hydraulic suspension that allows the driver to adjust the ride height by up to 140 mm as well as mechanical differential locks on the front and rear axles. The water wading depth is 800 mm as standard and can be increased to up to 890 mm. Depending on the market, there’s a choice of 5-, 6-, and 7-seat versions.

Under the hood, there’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is assisted by two permanent magnet synchronous motors, including a lower-output unit powering the front wheels and a higher-output unit powering the rear wheels.
In China, this combination delivers 550 kW (738 hp) of power and 760 Nm of torque, allowing the vehicle to hit 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds. In other markets, the system power is either 425 kW (570 hp) or 450 kW (603 hp), and the system torque is 760 Nm, which increases the 0-100 km/h acceleration time to 4.8 seconds.

A 36.8 kWh LFP battery pack powers the electric motors, giving the Denza B8 a pure electric range of 85 kilometres, as per WLTP. The combined range of the plug-in hybrid SUV is 825 kilometres, also as per WLTP. BYD does not have any immediate plans to launch this model in India, neither under the Denza brand nor under Fangchengbao.
