New Toyota Hilux (5)

Toyota has released the first teaser of the next-generation Hilux, previewing a sharper exterior, a completely redesigned cabin and the possibility of a mild-hybrid diesel powertrain

Toyota released an official teaser of the next-generation Hilux ahead of its global debut on July 28. The short teaser video doesn’t reveal much, but it does confirm that the iconic pickup will retain its rugged personality while receiving a comprehensive makeover inside and out. The video shows the new Hilux conquering muddy trails and deep water crossings, hinting that its off-road credentials remain intact.

The teaser and pictures we have seen before that the styling is more aggressive. Up front, it gets a larger honeycomb-pattern grille flanked by slimmer LED headlamps connected by a black trim piece. The front bumper has also been reworked, while the pronounced wheel arches continue to give the pickup its muscular stance. At the rear, Toyota has redesigned the tailgate and introduced new C-shaped LED tail lamps for a more modern appearance.

The biggest changes are expected inside the cabin. Toyota has given the Hilux a completely new dashboard centred around a 12.3-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system. A fresh three-spoke steering wheel, fully digital instrument cluster and a cleaner dashboard layout are also part of the update. The feature list is expected to include ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera and a comprehensive suite of ADAS functions, bringing the pickup closer to modern SUVs in terms of technology.

Under the skin, not much is expected to change. The new Hilux might continue using Toyota’s proven IMV platform, albeit with revisions aimed at improving refinement and driving dynamics. This should also help Toyota retain the pickup’s reputation for durability while avoiding the costs associated with developing an all-new architecture.

Power is expected to come from the familiar 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, although reports suggest Toyota could pair it with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The same technology made its way to the Fortuner recently, offering improved fuel efficiency, smoother start-stop operation and better low-speed drivability without altering the core diesel experience.

The Hilux has always appealed to buyers looking for a dependable lifestyle pickup that is equally comfortable on highways and rough terrain. With a more premium cabin, updated styling and the possibility of electrified diesel power, the next-generation model appears to be building on those strengths rather than reinventing the formula. More details will be revealed when Toyota officially pulls the wraps off the pickup later this month.
