New spy shots reveal more production-ready details of the Bonneville 400 as Triumph’s retro roadster inches closer to its debut

The Bonneville 400 has been spotted testing once again on Indian roads and the new spy images reveal a motorcycle that looks nearly ready for production. The test mule continues to wear minimal camouflage exposing almost every major design element. Going by the steady flow of sightings over recent months, the retro roadster could be moving closer to its market debut which is expected before the end of this year.

The rear profile immediately confirms that the Bonneville 400 follows a very different design philosophy from the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X and Speed T4. The motorcycle gets twin rear shock absorbers instead of a monoshock – instantly giving it the classic Bonneville vibe. A rounded rear fender, circular tail lamp, long single-piece seat and black peashooter exhaust further consolidate its old-school stance.

The prototype also provides another look at the wire-spoke wheels. The motorcycle continues to run on road-biased tyres while the side profile shows a new subframe developed specifically for this model. It looks like the Bonneville 400 is being developed to recreate the proportions associated with its larger Bonneville siblings to lure in buyers from RE’s fold.

Another visible highlight is the front suspension setup. Conventional telescopic forks are paired with rubber gaiters while the upright riding position, wide handlebar and circular mirrors stay in line with the traditional roadster formula. The circular instrument console also remains  but a larger TFT display could be reserved for top-spec trims.

The fuel tank appears larger than the 13-litre unit available on the existing Triumph 400 cc motorcycles. The broader tank, longer seat and relaxed ergonomics suggest the motorcycle could have good touring characteristics alongside being an everyday machine. Considering the brand’s latest launches, the Bonneville could be equipped with a 350 cc liquid-cooled mill.

The engine will continue with a six-speed gearbox while slipper and assist clutch, ride-by-wire throttle and dual-channel ABS could be offered too. Triumph could also introduce multiple variants of the Bonneville 400. One version may stay close to the classic formula with wire-spoke wheels and chrome detailing while another could gain alloy wheels and a darker finish.

Upon arrival, the Bonneville 400 will sit alongside the Speed 400, Speed T4, Scrambler 400 X and Scrambler 400 XC in Triumph’s growing entry-level portfolio. Pricing is expected to place it directly against the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Jawa and Yezdi 350s and Honda CB350 range.
