Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel variant known as ‘Bioflex’ has currently been offered only to the commercial segment
Maruti Suzuki has expanded its alternative fuel portfolio with the introduction of the Wagon R Bioflex as the popular entry-level hatchback has been engineered to operate on higher ethanol-blended fuels. In contrary to the regular Wagon R available to private customers in an expansive range, the newly announced model is based only on the range-topping ZXi+ trim.
At first glance, the Bioflex variant appears almost identical to the passenger-spec Wagon R. The familiar tall-boy silhouette, upright stance and spacious cabin layout have been carried over without major visual alterations. Only a handful of identifiers distinguish it from standard versions comprising dedicated Bioflex badging and flex-fuel graphics applied to the bodywork.
The cabin specification mirrors the equipment available on the top-end of the Wagon R range. Occupants get a dual-tone interior finish, fabric seat upholstery and a multifunction steering wheel. Some of the key highlights are a 7-inch infotainment display supporting smartphone connectivity through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, six airbags and electronic stability control.

Additional features associated with the donor trim are expected to compose rear parking sensors, front fog lamps, rear AC vents and a four-speaker audio system. Instead of appealing to individual customers, Maruti Suzuki has directed the Bioflex towards businesses and commercial operators – places it in a different bracket from the Wagon R Tour H3 as it is costlier by up to Rs. 2.2 lakh.

Under the bonnet sits Maruti Suzuki’s 1.2-litre K-Series four-cylinder petrol engine. To enable operation with elevated ethanol concentrations, engineers have revised several critical components. The fuel delivery system receives upgraded injectors and pumps while dedicated fuel lines have also been installed. An ethanol detection sensor constantly monitors fuel composition and works alongside revised software calibration within the engine management system.
Detailed output figures for the Bioflex have not yet been disclosed and we all know that the standard 1.2-litre Wagon R develops 91 hp and 114 Nm. Pricing has been fixed at Rs. 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom). Compared with the regular Wagon R ZXi+ manual, the Bioflex commands a premium of Rs. 86,000. The gap becomes even larger when compared with the commercial-spec Wagon R Tour range as mentioned above showing the additional engineering changes required to accommodate ethanol-compatible operation.
