Maruti Suzuki more than doubled Alto and S-Presso volumes in May 2026 while Tata Motors reported 16 per cent growth in its hatchback business during FY26
For nearly a decade, SUVs have dominated growth in the PV market eroding the share of hatchbacks and entry-level cars. Recent sales trends, however, indicate that the segment may be finding its footing again. Maruti Suzuki more than doubled Alto and S-Presso volumes in May 2026 while Tata Motors reported 16 per cent growth in its hatchback business during FY26. The numbers suggest that affordability, frugality and lower ownership costs are once again becoming major purchase considerations.
Combined sales of the Alto and S-Presso surged to 16,275 units in May 2026 compared to 6,776 units during the same month last year. The WagonR remained one of the country’s best-selling passenger vehicles with 18,076 units while the Baleno contributed 18,396 units. The Swift’s volumes stood at 17,519 units and the Celerio also continued attracting buyers.
Rising vehicle prices have played a major role in bringing them back to hatchbacks. Over the last few years, stricter safety regulations, additional feature requirements and higher commodity costs have increased prices across segments. Many SUVs that once started around Rs. 7.5 lakh now comfortably exceed Rs. 10 lakh in equivalent variants. For first-time buyers and budget-conscious households, hatchbacks continue to offer a more accessible entry point into car ownership.

Tata Motors is pursuing a similar strategy. While the company has built a reputation through SUVs such as the Punch, Nexon, Harrier and Sierra, it has not abandoned hatchbacks. Tata’s hatchback portfolio grew 16 per cent in FY26 as the Altroz continues to serve those seeking premium hatchback attributes while the Tiago remains one of the most affordable products in the company’s range.
Carmakers recognise that entry-level cars are essential for bringing new customers into the market. Many buyers who begin their ownership journey with an Alto, Tiago, WagonR or Celerio eventually upgrade to larger vehicles within the same brand. Losing presence in the hatchback segment therefore risks losing future customers altogether – something manufacturers are increasingly unwilling to accept.

The popularity of petrol-efficient hatchbacks and CNG-equipped variants further make compelling cases. While Utility vehicles continue to dominate industry growth and remain the preferred choice for many buyers, the latest numbers show that hatchbacks are no longer in freefall. Maruti Suzuki’s increase in small-car volumes and Tata Motors’ continued investment in the segment show that affordable passenger vehicles still have a substantial place in the market.
