Triumph Speed T4 could get a new 350 cc engine as early as next month in India with slightly reduced performance numbers

The sighting of a test prototype of the Triumph Speed T4 in India points towards a significant update but it looks unchanged on the outside. The motorcycle appears visually identical to the current model suggesting that the real changes are likely happening beneath the bodywork. The key reason behind this development lies in India’s taxation system.

Motorcycles with engine capacities above 350 cc are subject to 40 per cent GST while those at or below 350 cc attract only 18 per cent. The substantial gap has a direct influence on pricing – especially in a segment where affordability plays a major role in buying decisions. To comply with this structure, Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles are expected to rework their existing engines.

Instead of building an entirely new powertrain, the current 399 cc liquid-cooled unit will likely be downsized to fall just under the 350 cc threshold by modifying internal components such as bore dimensions. The strategy will help control development costs while unlocking a significant pricing advantage. The updated motorcycles could become around Rs. 20,000 more affordable with expected ex-showroom prices hovering near Rs. 1.75 lakh for the Speed T4.

At present, Triumph’s India-focused lineup including the Triumph Speed 400, Triumph Scrambler 400 X and Triumph Thruxton 400 sits at around 399 cc – placing them above the lower tax bracket. The brand looks to reposition these motorcycles more effectively in the entry-level middleweight segment and performance is expected to see a slight dip due to the reduced engine capacity.

The current output of around 40 hp and 37.5 Nm could drop to approximately 34–35 hp but the overall riding experience may remain largely unchanged. The timing of this move is also important as April 2026 is expected to be when Triumph may reveal its next set of downsized products in India. Moreover, Rajiv Bajaj had already confirmed that new sub-350 cc motorcycles are in development.

The unchanged appearance of the test mule further consolidates the possibility that only the engine is being updated. The move could influence other manufacturers as well. Brands like KTM and Bajaj may also revise their 400 cc offerings including models from the Dominar and NS range to take advantage of the same tax benefits and remain competitive against rivals such as Royal Enfield in the segment.
