2026 marks the tenth anniversary of Maruti Suzuki’s entry into the modern SUV space which happened with the first-gen Brezza (Vitara Brezza)
Maruti Suzuki entered India’s booming SUV space with the launch of the first-gen Brezza (called Vitara Brezza) in 2016 and has gradually built a wide line-up of six SUVs to capitalise on the trend. This expansion has significantly helped the company grow its market share in the category.
During an investor meeting held on 17 March, Maruti Suzuki announced that it occupied a 19.6% market share in the SUV segment between April 2025 and February 2026. Between April 2019 and March 2026, the company’s SUV market share was at 16.8%, which means its positioning has improved by 2.8% over the FY2020-FY2026 period.
In the first nine months of FY2026, Maruti Suzuki sold 3.67 lakh SUVs. Compared to 3.53 lakh units sold in the same period in FY2025, this marked a 3.97% growth. Maruti Suzuki plans to further expand its SUV line-up in the future to find new growth. The company says it will launch seven new SUVs in the next five to six years, which will presumably be a mix of mid-cycle refreshes, full model changes, and new models.

The seven new models will include the facelifted versions of the Brezza and Fronx, with the former expected to be launched in mid-2026 and the latter in 2027. Also expected to arrive by next year is a new Tata Punch rival codenamed Maruti Y43, potentially the successor to the Maruti Ignis. The new micro-SUV will likely be followed by another entry-level SUV codenamed Maruti YK9, expected to be derived from the Suzuki Hustler kei car made in Japan.
Maruti Suzuki’s SUV launches in the next 1-2 years should include a refreshed version of the Grand Vitara as well. Within the long timeframe the company is stating for the seven new SUVs, we reckon the Jimny, Victoris, and e-Vitara will also undergo a facelift.
