FY26 saw Mahindra recording a total of 6,60,276 units with a massive 19.7 per cent YoY growth as it overtook Tata Motors for second position
The recently concluded financial year 2026 changed the pecking order at the top of passenger vehicle market. While Maruti Suzuki retained its numero uno status, Mahindra & Mahindra moved ahead of Tata Motors to claim the second spot. Mahindra ended the year at 6,60,276 units – up 19.7 per cent and the growth did not come from one breakout product.
It came from a lineup that’s been doing the job consistently for years. The Bolero and Scorpio, for instance, are still pulling strong numbers despite being around for over two decades. The latter, in particular, features the more modern Scorpio N and the Scorpio Classic. On top of that base, newer offerings are doing exactly what they are supposed to.
The Thar range – now including the Thar Roxx and regular 3-door model – continues to bring in lifestyle-based consumers while the XUV 7XO – which replaced the XUV700 – keeps the SUV space covered in a more premium end of the spectrum. Then there is the XUV 3XO which has become one of the brand’s more important volume drivers in the compact SUV category.

What is also worth noting is how quickly Mahindra’s EV plans are translating into actual numbers. The XEV 9e, BE 6 and the recently added XEV 9S have together crossed 50,000 units in about a year coinciding with the brand enduring a whopping 407 per cent growth. Now compare that to Tata Motors, its volume figures grew 14.1 per cent to 6,31,387 units.
The Nexon and Punch are still everywhere on the road and for good reason – they continue to sit right at the top of the compact SUV pile. The Sierra added some new interest while the Harrier and Safari kept things ticking in the higher segments. While Tata’s strengths are concentrated in a few key nameplates, Mahindra has spread out its volumes across more models – old and new – and that balance is what helped it get ahead.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor India slipped further with sales down 2.3 per cent and market share dropping to around 12.6 per cent. The Creta is still doing its bit but it’s clearly facing more heat now than it did in the past. At the very top, Maruti Suzuki is still in a league of its own with 18.2 lakh units but its market share dropped a bit to 38.9 per cent.
