The production-spec Honda 0 α is expected to launch sometime next year in India; will be produced locally for domestic and foreign markets

Honda Cars India has officially commenced a nationwide testing programme for its forthcoming electric SUV, the 0 α as the stage has been set for the brand’s first all-electric vehicle for the local market. The prototype has begun public road verification trials across India and the test run was flagged off from Tapukara, Rajasthan where the company operates its manufacturing facility.

Senior executives from Honda’s India leadership team attended the ceremony including Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India. The exercise will see the prototype driven across different parts of the country to assess its performance in varied real-world conditions. It was first revealed globally at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 late last year as the Honda 0 α concept.

The model plays a significant role in Honda’s next-gen electric vehicle strategy and will be developed for global markets including Japan. The production version is expected to make its debut internationally around 2027 with India likely to be one of the early launch markets. During the testing phase, Honda will evaluate the prototype across a broad spectrum of driving environments.

Engineers will study aspects such as ride comfort, handling, efficiency, durability and overall reliability according to Honda. The vehicle will also be tested in demanding weather scenarios including extreme summer heat and monsoon conditions while charging compatibility across multiple charging networks will also be assessed.

As for the design, the Honda 0 α follows the brand’s “Thin, Light and Wise” engineering philosophy. The SUV features a sleek and upright profile as the test prototype’s differences compared to the concept are already evident. For instance, the grille section is larger and wider while the stacked lighting elements without horizontal LED DRL and bumper finish similar to the concept can be seen.

Other highlights are prominent wheel arches, tall pillars, a wide bonnet structure, turn signals integrated into ORVMs and dual-tone wheels. Honda’s “Thin” packaging approach is expected to enable a slimmer cabin layout while still maintaining generous interior space. The electric SUV is expected to be offered with two battery pack options with the claimed driving range going over 500 km per charge.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO, Honda Cars India, said, “The start of pan-India Public Road Verification testing is a key milestone in our electrification journey. India has unique driving and climate conditions, and it is important for us to test our electric vehicle thoroughly in real-world environments. This programme reflects Honda’s global engineering strengths combined with a strong focus on local customer needs, as we prepare to introduce an electric SUV that offers reliability, comfort, and ease of use.”
