Hyundai is expected to bring in a host of new hybrid models over the next few years and here we have explained three of them

Toyota has had India’s hybrid SUV market largely to itself for the past few years – the Hyryder, Innova HyCross and their Maruti Suzuki siblings account for close to 80 per cent of hybrid passenger vehicle volumes in the country. Hyundai is now preparing to change that with three hybrid SUVs in the pipeline across different segments and price points.

They are expected to arrive within the next two to three years. The most volume critical of the three is the next generation Creta internally codenamed SX3. Due around 2027, it will ride on a new platform that gives Hyundai the freedom to significantly rework the SUV’s proportions and design.

The cabin gets a substantial upgrade in materials and technology while the powertrain lineup may retain the existing petrol, turbo petrol and diesel options and add a hybrid variant as the headline new addition. The Creta crossed 2 lakh annual units in FY26 – the only midsize SUV to do so – which means a hybrid version landing in this segment would carry genuine market weight.

Sitting above the Alcazar and below the global Tucson in Hyundai’s hierarchy is the Ni1i – a new three-row SUV currently in development with a late 2027 debut expected. It will use a modified version of Hyundai’s 1.5-litre petrol engine in a hybrid configuration with an electric-only mode for low-speed city driving.

The same powertrain could also be employed in the next-gen Creta as well as its sibling the Kia Seltos in the future. At the top end, the Palisade Hybrid is being considered for India with a possible arrival around 2028. Globally it pairs a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor in a full-size seven-seat package sitting well above anything currently in Hyundai’s India lineup.

Representational

With the Creta covering the midsize space, the Ni1i targeting the three-row segment and the Palisade slotted at the premium end, Hyundai appears to be in the process of creating a proper hybrid portfolio and it will be interesting to see how the market evolves with the inclusion of new technologies and participation of more auto manufacturers.
