Triumph Bonneville 400 Spied India

The India-spec version of the Triumph Bonneville 400 could feature a 349 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder unit found in its other 400 cc siblings

The upcoming Triumph Bonneville 400 has been spotted testing again and this time in India completely undisguised showcasing an even stronger retro appeal than in previous spy images. It reveals a more classic iteration featuring chrome detailing on the crankcase and exhaust system. Ever since the brand ventured into the entry-level middleweight space in collaboration with Bajaj Auto, the Bonneville iteration has been anticipated.

The baby Bonneville stays true to its legendary lineage drawing inspiration from its larger siblings – the 900 cc and 1200 cc Bonneville models. The design language is unmistakably retro featuring a round LED headlamp, teardrop-shaped fuel tank, long and chunky mudguards and the signature peashooter-style exhaust carrying forward the Bonneville DNA.

Under the skin, the Bonneville 400 is expected to share its platform with other Triumph 400-series motorcycles like the Triumph Speed 400. However, more significantly, Triumph could be working on a downsized version of its TR-series engine for India. While the global model may continue with a 398 cc engine, the India-spec version could feature a 349 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder unit to take advantage of lower taxation.

It will undoubtedly help Triumph to position the Bonneville 400 more competitively against the immensely popular Royal Enfield Classic 350. In terms of performance, the 349 cc engine is expected to be similar to the updated unit seen on the Speed 400 and its others siblings. For reference, it produces around 37 PS and 32 Nm of torque but the Bonneville 400 may get a different state of tune to better suit its retro character.

The hardware setup also reflects its classic roots featuring telescopic front forks with gaiters and twin rear shock absorbers – much like the bigger Bonneville models. At the same time, Triumph has added a touch of modernity with a single-pod digital instrument cluster which is likely to support smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation and is a big upgrade compared to the semi-digital unit found in other 400 cc offerings.
