Hero ended the financial year with about 6.07 million units in the domestic market but Honda wasn’t too far off at around 5.75 million

Hero MotoCorp is still leading the Indian two-wheeler market and despite all the noise around Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India closing in, the gap hasn’t really disappeared. If anything, it is stretched a bit in FY26. Hero ended the year with about 6.07 million units in the domestic market but Honda wasn’t too far off at around 5.75 million.

The comparison leaves a difference of over 3 lakh units which is not small by any measure. What’s worth noting is that this gap was actually closer last year. Back in FY25, the difference was around 2.86 lakh units with Hero at 5.61 million and Honda at 5.33 million. So after a phase where Honda kept chipping away, things seem to have steadied.

And honestly, this isn’t surprising. Hero’s strength hasn’t changed as the commuter motorcycle space continues to do bulk of work. The Hero Splendor alone stays put selling in huge numbers especially outside the big cities. Meanwhile, Honda’s story is a bit different as scooters are still its stronghold but it isn’t as comfortable as it used to be.

TVS Motor Company and Suzuki Motorcycle India have made sure of that. Consumers have way more options and Honda isn’t running away with the segment like before. Where Honda really feels the pressure is in entry-level motorcycles. It has added products, tried to widen the range but cracking Hero’s dominance here is a different game altogether but models like Shine 100 did their part.

Hero, for its part, has been trying to move up – midsize motorcycle range, premium and sporty scooters and some of the clear example. To its credit for trying, the Vida standalone electric sub-brand is doing brilliant numbers in recent past. Registrations nearly tripled in FY26 which is a big jump even if volumes are still catching up to leaders.

If you look at total dispatches including exports, the lead tightens quite a bit. Hero did about 6.47 million units while Honda ended at around 6.37 million. That’s under a lakh difference – basically neck and neck globally. And then there’s TVS Motor Company sitting right behind, scaling up its activities across different segments.

After overtaking Yamaha globally, it is now targeting somewhere between 6.8 and 7.2 million units in FY27. If that happens, Honda could have a bigger problem on its hands. So yeah, Hero is still number one but it is not the same comfortable lead anymore!
