Facelifts, all-new generations, electric SUVs and first-time entrants will look to make an impact in the compact SUV segment over the next two years
The compact SUV space is gearing up for another major transformation over the next two years. Several established nameplates are set to receive comprehensive updates while a number of manufacturers are preparing all-new entries. The upcoming launches will comprise multiple powertrain options across different price points.
Starting off, Maruti Suzuki is all set to introduce the updated Brezza next week. Along with cosmetic updates, the compact SUV is expected to receive a larger infotainment system, redesigned alloy wheels, a six-speed manual gearbox and an underfloor-mounted CNG tank similar to the arrangement introduced on the Victoris. A 1.0-litre turbo gasoline mill could also be added.
Kia and VinFast will also enter the spotlight soon but through very different approaches. The Syros EV will become Kia’s first electric compact SUV carrying over much of the standard model’s design while introducing battery-electric tech. Expected battery options include 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh packs accompanied by features such as Level 2 ADAS, V2L functionality and a 360-degree camera upon arrival in just over a week’s time.

At the opposite end of the market sits the VinFast VF 3, a compact electric SUV equipped with an 18.6 kWh battery pack and designed to occupy a price bracket that remains largely untapped by mainstream manufacturers. The following year will witness a significant change as several manufacturers look to bring in completely new products instead of facelifts.
The Mahindra Vision S is expected to emerge as a smaller sibling to the Scorpio N – sitting above the XUV 3XO in the brand’s portfolio. Based on the NU_IQ platform, it is expected to feature upright proportions alongside 1.2-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines. Renault will finally establish a greater presence in this category through the Bridger which is expected around the end of 2027. The SUV could feature 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.

Tata Motors is developing an all-new Nexon with a longer wheelbase, redesigned exterior and a wider spread of powertrains covering turbo petrol, CNG and electric variants. Kia’s next generation Sonet is expected to utilise a new architecture, accompanied by larger dimensions, a substantially revised cabin and additional safety technologies upon launch sometime next year.
Volkswagen is also evaluating the Tera for India. Sharing its MQB A0 IN underpinnings with the Skoda Kylaq, the SUV is expected to continue with the familiar 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine while occupying the premium end of the compact SUV space. The model will draw design from its bigger sibling, the Taigun while the features list could resemble that of the Kylaq.

Honda’s long-awaited compact SUV will arrive slightly later with an expected debut in early 2028. The Japanese manufacturer has largely remained absent from the sub-four-metre SUV category. The upcoming model is expected to share its architecture with the latest Amaze and could initially use a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine while hybrid technology remains a possibility.
Hyundai is also expected to introduce a locally developed compact electric SUV with extensive localisation and a targeted real-world driving range of around 400 km within the next 12 months to compete firmly with Tata Motors and Mahindra while the slightly larger Bayon is also in the works in addition to the next-gen Creta. The next two years therefore promise one of the biggest product offensives the compact SUV segment has witnessed.
