Hyundai Bayon to be slotted between the Venue and Creta, aimed at capturing a greater share of the mid-size SUV segment
The Euro-focused Hyundai Bayon, introduced in February 2021, is set to undergo a complete makeover this year. Unlike the currently sold first-generation model, the second-generation model will be designed to appeal to markets even outside Europe, including India and other emerging countries.
Hyundai has been testing the next-gen Bayon in several countries for a while now, and one of them is India. Recently, a pair of camouflaged test mules carrying the final design were spotted near the company’s factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Although heavily disguised, these prototypes gave away quite a lot of details about the changes in the next-gen Bayon.
Moving into its second generation, the Hyundai Bayon is undergoing a complete character change. Instead of the familiar low-slung, crossover-like body, Hyundai is going for a taller and squarer body that resonates better with global SUV buyers. That, along with obvious improvements in interior space, would make the second-generation model better suited for Indian customers, who demand a stronger road presence and a roomier interior compared to European customers.

The next-gen Bayon will likely measure around 4.2 metres in length and challenge the likes of Maruti Victoris, Skoda Kushaq, and VW Taigun. While there would be some cannibalisation with the Creta, that would only last until next year, when Hyundai will give it a complete makeover for the third generation and extend its length to around 4.5 metres.
Inside, the next-gen Hyundai Bayon should feature a modern and elegant interior with a balanced focus on aesthetics and ergonomics. It will likely pack features such as a fully digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats with power-adjustment on the driver’s side, a touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems.

Local reports say Hyundai is planning to debut a 1.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine in the next-gen Bayon, although a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine is also expected to be offered. The company may not give a diesel engine option, though. It will likely launch the next-gen Bayon in India sometime in the third quarter of the year.
